We are excited to announce that La Boite Theatre has been recognised as Queensland’s seventh major arts organisation! This milestone comes after the success of our funding application through the National Performing Arts Partnership Framework, as announced today by Creative Australia and Arts Queensland. It is a monumental moment for Australia’s oldest continuously running professional theatre company to enter the Framework on the eve of the organisation's 100th anniversary in 2025. The joint, multi-year investment from both state and federal governments acknowledges La Boite for its leadership and significant contribution to Queensland’s arts sector. La Boite’s entry into the Framework is a testament to the company’s artistic vision and strong position within the national arts and cultural ecology. The team is proud to continue championing Queensland artists and their stories and provide opportunities for these works to be seen throughout the state, across the country and taken internationally in the years ahead! To be Australia’s most diverse theatre company. Creating Theatre Since 1925.
About us
As Australia’s oldest professional theatre company, La Boite Theatre has been energising artists and audiences for almost 100 years. During this time, the Company has been a time capsule for the Australian voice along with other small national companies like La Mama, Darlinghurst Theatre, Griffin, and Australian Plays Transform. Working on the lands of the Jagera and Turrbul people, our vision is to re-birth the new Australian voice over the next hundred years to be the country’s most diverse theatre company. We strive to develop and profile new voices and artists, and share stories that promote cultural equity, social improvement, and interrogate moral and spiritual values and individual and collective responsibility. La Boite plays a crucial role in the local, state, and national arts sector as an incubator and producer of new work, with a dedicated focus on the sustainability of Queensland-based arts practice from emerging to established practitioners, producers, and arts leaders. In the past, and more critically in the future, La Boite interrogates the boundaries of theatre, creating pathways for local and national artists to mainstream stages in Brisbane and beyond. Mainstage works of note include: The Poison of Polygamy (with Sydney Theatre Company), Tiddas (with Queensland Performing Arts Centre & Brisbane Festival), An Ideal Husband, The Last Five Years, seven methods of killing kylie jenner (with Darlinghurst Theatre Company and Green Door Theatre Company), Away, Caesar, Naked & Screaming, The Neighbourhood (with Multicultural Australia), From Darkness (with Brisbane Festival), Laser Beak Man (with Dead Puppet Society) Single Asian Female, and Prize Fighter. La Boite has its sight set on being the most culturally relevant theatrical institution in the country by putting on the whole world on show. Discover more at laboite.com.au

"Post-pandemic hibernation, declining interest in high school drama study and rising costs mean running a theatre company is not for the faint-hearted. "For Brisbane’s La Boite Theatre, this is just part of the ups and downs of its century-long economic and social ride – and there is still plenty to celebrate." In this recent interview with Newsreel, La Boite CEO and Artistic Director Courtney Stewart talks about bringing audiences back into the room and the important balance between giving people hope through uplifting performance while not walking away from promoting the challenging conversations inherent in much of its traditional repertoire. With thanks to Newsreel and our partners at McCullough Robertson Lawyers.

Today at the Actors’ & Entertainers’ Benevolent Awards morning tea, we had the honour of celebrating Lynn Rainbow Reid AM, who received the prestigious Alan Edwards Lifetime Achievement Award 2024 for her exceptional contributions to the Queensland arts industry. Named to honour the memory of Actors' & Entertainers' Benevolent Fund of Queensland (Inc) Fund Qld inaugural president, the Alan Edwards Lifetime Achievement Award is presented annually to a performing arts professional who has contributed significantly to the industry, often above and beyond the call of duty. Lynn was recognised both for her illustrious career as one on of Australia’s leading stage and screen actors, and for her generous philanthropic support of the sector both personally and via the Rainbow Reid Endowment that nurtures the professional development of QUT (Queensland University of Technology) Acting students. Lynn joins a formidable list of past recipients that includes, among others, Dianne Eden, Sue Rider, Sue Benner Tony Gould and Aunty Roxanne McDonald. What an outstanding achievement.
