Latrobe City Council was proud to host this year’s Gippsland New Energy Conference (GNEC) on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Gippsland Performing Arts Centre, where opportunities, challenges and innovations were explored to drive transition into a sustainable future. Over 700 people attended the GNEC over the two days, with keynote speakers including Andy Mccarthy, Chris Miller, Stan Krpan and many more. The conference also included Q&A discussion panels and a free community expo including food stalls and entertainment. Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen also attended to help officially launch the Gippsland Offshore Wind Alliance. As part of the conference, attendees had the opportunity to see these projects firsthand with tours of the biogas renewable energy project at the Hyland Landfill and the geothermal technology at the Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre. Hosting this year’s conference was a prime opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to an equitable transition towards a new energy future for the region. Our Transition Plan underscores our priority to move Latrobe City towards a bigger and brighter future, while also transitioning to support local jobs. We all have a role to play in transitioning to a more sustainable future. Latrobe City is doing its part by moving towards Net Zero emissions through key projects such as the biogas renewable energy initiative, geothermal technology at our pools and leisure centres, solar panel installations across major buildings, and LED lighting replacements.

On Monday the School Crossing Supervisors met for their annual training refresher run by School Crossings Australia. The detailed training goes in to the more technical elements of the role including what to do in an emergency, the legislation behind supervising a school crossing and child safe standards. Council’s School Crossing Supervisors play an important role in the safety of children and pedestrians, pictured below is one of the groups enjoying the training day.

This time last week I was making my way down the Princes Highway to attend  C3/CityCountryConnect at GPAC, Traralgon. John Calabro and his amazing team from TVFH in collaboration with Latrobe City Council put together an incredible day of speakers, education and inspiration. Not only is John an inspirational thought leader and business owner, but is genuinely one of the best humans I know. Congratulations on bringing together so many curious minds in one room. Keep being ace. Pictured is a sneaky paparazzi shot of John doing his thang.

Today our C3/CityCountryConnect business event went down in Traralgon. We hosted around 35 visitors from outside Gippsland plus about 70 locals in a room totally buzzing with positive energy. It's always a bit nerve-wracking running an event but today's showing was amazing and made it clear that Gippsland the Latrobe Valley is a region eager to grow and do businesses with neighbouring economic centres. In a time of turbulence and uncertainty we heard repeated words of optimism and encouragement. There's a bright future waiting for those willing to work hard to find it, and earn it. I can't say thank you enough to all of those who helped make it happen—and I hope I didn't miss anyone in the shoutouts below! — Latrobe City Council's Business Development Team for entrusting us with the job to make a great event, espescially Terri Plozza, but also Zane Corbett, Christy Hoiles, and Glen McColl (ACEcD) and the amazing team at the Gippsland Performing Arts Centre, including Brett Tippet and co., plus Deputy Mayor Tracie Lund for welcoming everyone. — Our business group representatives Wendi Dawson, Melbourne Business Network (MBN) Steve Palmer, The IQ Club Joseph Ghaly, Coraggio Shaun Wallis, Good Blokes Society — Our industry specialists Christopher Gray, Haystack Group Chace Sexton, Leadership Management Australia Jon Kenfield, Solutionist Thomas Butler, Nash Advisory & Capital — Our keynote speakers Andy McCarthy, Founder Gippsland Solar/Author Victor Perton, The Centre for Optimism — Thanks to all the people who travelled from near and far to join in! — And finally my team The View From Here who worked tirelessly to make it all happen: Jes Egan, Andrew Northover (who took all these supercool photos), Georgia Suckling, Bryce Sandall and Vivian O'Connor—Thanks for all your effort!!!
