What are the risks and opportunities presented by generative AI for practising lawyers? Does GenAI stifle creativity or promote it? What does GenAI mean for us particularly as social justice lawyers? Today we heard from Ed Santow and Jessica Wyndham speak on 'Generative AI: being bold and being smart' and there were lots of questions in the room, including those listed above, from engaged minds. For those wanting to know more about AI and the law, Ed and University of Technology Sydney have produced this great video!

Some striking observations in the climate change and civil law session at our Civil Law Conference this morning. Dr Anna Leditschke, Lecturer in Urban Planning at Western Sydney University reported on some recent research that indicates that social and affordable housing residents in Western Sydney endured 130 days of indoor air temps above 28 degrees, significantly above WHO recommendations. Dr Emily Kothe, Senior Researcher at the Law and Justice Foundation of NSW acknowledged the group and systemic effort required to address climate change legal need: ‘When you are working with a client, of course your focus is on how do you help that client … but we can’t solve natural disaster or climate change legal need one person at a time … [you must also be thinking] how can you be contributing to an evidence base that drives more effective law reform and policy change.’ If you’re interested in reading more about natural disaster related legal need in Australia, Dr Kothe has authored this report for the Law and Justice Foundation of NSW

Race Discrimination Commissioner Giridharan Sivaraman has delivered the keynote at the Legal Aid NSW Civil Law Conference 2024 and laid down a challenge for attendees, in acknowledging today’s theme of ‘talking change’: ‘ … don’t just talk the talk, but walk the walk when it comes to bringing about change … If you stand for justice then you must challenge structural racism and meaningfully address legal inequities.’ Image description in alt text.

The 2024 Legal Aid NSW Civil Law Conference has begun - welcome to our 365 attendees! This is the largest Civil conference we’ve held and we’re so excited to hear from a packed program of speakers all about ‘Talking Change: the future of Civil Law’. In her opening address, Executive Director Civil Law Meredith Osborne said that lawyers are ‘constantly responding to change so we can best respond to people experiencing the most disadvantage in NSW.’

    CEO, Legal Aid NSW

It fills me with great pride (and a tinge of sadness!) to congratulate Alex Colquhoun on her appointment as a Judge of Division 2 of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia.   As the Executive Director of Legal Aid NSW’s Family Law Division, I’ve worked very closely with Alex as she has led the largest family law practice in Australia through much of the pandemic, a family law blueprint (outlining our vision for the delivery of services), the merger of the courts, and significant federal and state law reform pieces.   Alex has always led the division with a constant aim to set the gold standard in family law representation. She is kind, warm and has an excellent sense of humour. Our loss is the Court’s gain! Congratulations, Alex.
