Congratulations to immunotherapist and extracellular vesicle researcher at The University of Queensland (UQ), Associate Professor Joy Wolfram, PhD, on being named Queensland’s 2024 Young Tall Poppy of the Year. 🤩 The awards celebrate scientific excellence and a passion for science communication, inspiring young people to enter #STEM study and careers, with 16 of Queensland’s outstanding scientists recognised at this year’s awards. 👩🔬 👨🔬 Professor Wolfram is working on improved medicines to counter cancer and other life-threatening diseases, using tiny natural particles – extracellular vesicles – to treat illnesses such as heart disease, kidney disease, and breast cancer. We are pleased to announce that Dr Ryan Parlett has been appointed as our Acting CEO, starting today. Ryan brings a wealth of experience to lead the organisation into its next phase. As part of this, we will be undertaking a detailed strategic review of LSQ that will involve engaging with our members and stakeholders across the life sciences ecosystem to gain important feedback.      Ryan has more than 20 years’ experience in the life sciences sector spanning business development, commercialisation, manufacturing, grants and incentives, consulting, government relations, and industry advocacy. He has extensive experience of working in both Australian and international markets, including the USA, Europe and APAC, including South Korea, Japan and China.     He was the previous Chair for the AusBiotech Queensland State Committee and previous Chair for the Science, Technology & Innovation Committee at the American Chamber of Commerce in Australia (AmCham Australia).   Incoming Acting CEO, Dr Ryan Parlett, says, “I have a passion for the Queensland life sciences sector, and it has been great to see the ecosystem grow not only in Queensland but nationally. "A large part of my focus will be leading the strategic review of LSQ over the coming months to ensure the organisation remains a peak body for the life sciences in Queensland and continues to meet the needs of its members and the sector." It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Dr Iris Depaz. Dr Depaz was a scientist, leader, and a beloved member of our community. Her contributions to the field of life sciences, particularly through her work at Sanofi and the Translational Science Hub, have left an indelible mark. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to her family, Dr Chris Booth and their children, during this difficult time. Our thoughts are also with her dedicated team at Sanofi and the Translational Science Hub, who have lost not only a leader but also a mentor and a friend. Good news for #regional #innovators –  Applications are now open for the Advance Queensland Regional Precincts and Places Infrastructure and Technology Program. 💸 The program offers grants of up to $3 million for organisations to deliver smart infrastructure, technology and upgrades that support future industry-focussed collaborative projects. 🤝 This can fund capital works, including building infrastructure, digital infrastructure and the cost of plant and equipment. Thanks Women in Technology for a great networking event in #Brisbane last night. LSQ team Natalie Davis and Sally Dillon carpooled with Translational Research Institute Australia colleague Glenda Colburn to catch up with some of #Brisbane’s #WomenInTechnology. It was great to take in the city lights over the river, meet women working in tech and find common ground with some the WIT team. We talked about our respective upcoming awards (#GENEAwards and #WITAwards), the challenges facing #WomenInSTEM, and the opportunities for #collaboration to empower women and girls to flourish in their chosen careers. What was a table of biotech folk doing at the second annual AmCham Australia Agribusiness Innovation Forum and Showcase held last week on the eve of the 148th Ekka? Mostly nodding at the similarities between the challenges and possibilities in the #biotech and #agtech industries ... not to mention experiencing some serious envy at the idea of being given the opportunity to work with NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration "until your business is commercially viable". 🚀 Thanks to Michael Junger for inviting #LSQ to join the Vaxxas table for the event. We left inspired by the story of Dr Bronwyn Darlington licencing #NASA technology designed for space to develop a technology that can tell if a cow is pregnant by identifying volatile organic compounds on their breath. 🐄 She is now investigating using the tech to detect disease as well, both in cattle and other farm animals – we wish Agscent success in securing Australian funding to get this product to market. Dr Darlington's experience shows that innovative tech can have applications across disciplines. Top tip from James Robertson from Auszoo Pet Proteins, who is turning waste meat products into pet food for the US market, was that "if you're an aspiring business wanting to get into the US, learn how to tell your story and share it." His tale was indeed one of seizing the opportunity and then running very very fast to keep up. And Bryce Camm, Chair of Beef Australia, spoke about the increasing use of tech to drive efficiency and increase productivity in ag and the importance of research being translated and commercialised then exported (sound familiar? 🤔 ) Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Landline reporter Pip Courtney chaired a fascinating and occasionally hilarious panel discussion between Dr Bronwyn Darlington, Brian Healey and Owen Williams about key trends and the current state of the industry.
