Huge congratulations to Mater’s Donata Sackey, who has been named winner of the Lifetime Achiever award at the Multicultural Queensland Awards 2024.   Donata is our Director, Multicultural and Refugee Health and has worked to improve the health and wellbeing of newly-arrived refugees and people seeking asylum for more than 30 years. The award recognises extraordinary individuals who have demonstrated an outstanding long-term commitment to supporting and promoting and inclusive multicultural Queensland – and Donata is a worthy winner!   We are incredibly proud of Donata and the difference she has made to some of Queensland’s most vulnerable people.

Mater was thrilled to be at the launch of the 2024 The Courier-Mail Bush Summit in Townsville this morning, which brought together leaders from all industries to discuss the opportunities and issues facing regional areas of Australia today and into the future. The conversation will continue next week, with the Bush Summit travelling to regional centres in other states. We are leading the national conversation around regional health, ensuring the highest quality care at all of our 11 hospitals and across our other three ministries Mater Education, Mater Research and Mater Foundation.

Mater Private Hospital Redland is the first hospital in Australia to commission Bausch + Lomb Surgical’s new digital SeeLuma microscope. The microscope provides cutting-edge, big-screen 3D visualisation for eye procedures, including cataracts and retina surgery. Ophthalmic surgeon Dr Sunil Warrier was the first Australian surgeon to use the new technology. “When surgeons can see better, we can perform neater, cleaner surgery and treat more patients sooner,” he said. A tiny baby born with a rare condition has become the first patient at Mater Mothers’ Hospital to be fed using a new breastfeeding technique. Oscar was born with oesophageal atresia (OA), a condition where the oesophagus – or food pipe – doesn’t connect to the stomach. He is the first baby at the hospital to benefit from ‘sham’ breastfeeding. The ‘sham’ breastfeeding technique allows Oscar to breastfeed like any other baby, but the milk that gathers in his blocked oesophagus is removed by a suction tube through his nose. Some of the removed milk is then fed back to Oscar via a gastrostomy tube inserted into his stomach. The procedure is complex and time-consuming, but it allows him to develop breast-feeding skills and to associate oral feeding with filling his tiny stomach.
