About us
MATES in Construction is an industry-based charity established in 2008, aimed at reducing high levels of suicide in the Australian construction industry. MATES is an industry-led, research-backed charity, that is building a volunteer network of eyes and ears on the ground, trained to recognise the signs a workmate might be struggling with life and connect them to help. We lose a construction worker to suicide every second day. We also know that construction workers are 6 x times more likely to die from suicide than an accident at work. In the last 12 months 30% our apprentices have thought about suicide. A suicide is said to impact at least 135 people (conservatively). In 2021, MATES in Construction was recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as an example of global suicide prevention best practice. Movember 's The Real Face of Men's Health Report was launched in Parliament this week. The report is a result of years-long Movember funded research to answer the question; What does men's health really look like? And what does it mean to everyone around them? 🏃♂️🏃♀️ Unispace Sydney Team Takes on City2Surf 2024! 🌊 What a fantastic day it was for our Sydney team as they laced up and hit the pavement for the iconic City2Surf 2024—a beautiful run from the CBD to Bondi Beach. With perfect weather and high spirits, our team powered through the 14km, and despite a few blisters, everyone crossed the finish line with smiles on their faces! But the day wasn’t just about the run—it was about giving back. We are proud to have raised funds for MATES, a charity that has been making a real difference since 2008 by working to reduce the high level of suicide among Australian construction workers. MATES in Construction NSW CEO, Brad Parker and MATES NSW Field Office, Joey Browne were invited to meet with the Consul General of Ireland – Rosie Keane and Deputy Head of Mission – Kevin Hennessey on Friday 19th July at the Irish Consul General’s Office in Sydney. It was an absolute privilege for MATES to meet both the Consul General and the Deputy Head of Mission to talk about the MATES in Construction Program. The Consul General Rosie Keane commented about how a large number of ex-pat Irish work within our industry and deal with the isolation of family who are back home in Ireland. She saw the value of the MATES Program not just for those within our industry but the wider Irish/Australian Community. The Consul General has invited MATES in Construction to speak at the Club Hibernia (Latin for Ireland) networking event scheduled in September to address the 350 attendees. Yesterday MATES in Construction (Aust) CEO, Chris Lockwood attended the Foundations and Frontieres (FF24) forum put together by the Australian Constructors Association (ACA). The forum was hosted to discuss a new movement to transform how the construction industry operates. This movement is about a coordinated national response. With better mentally healthy workplaces recognised as the number one priority to support our construction workforce into the future Representatives from across the industry, unions and both state and federal governments were brought together, with all attendees having the opportunity to contribute and be heard.
