Prof Kiarash Khosrotehrani is the inaugural St Baker-Soyer chair in Dermatology at the University of Queensland Frazer Institute where he leads the Experimental Dermatology Group and is the Deputy Director of the Australian Skin and Skin Cancer Research Centre in Brisbane. He is a Fellow of the Australian College of Dermatologists, Director of Dermatology at Princess Alexandra Hospital, practices at the Prince Charles Hospital and the Skin and Cancer Foundation’s Queensland Institute of Dermatology and is leading innovative clinical trials in wound healing, keratinocyte cancers and melanoma. 🌞 CLINICAL TRIAL SPOTLIGHT: I-MAT 🔍 Investigating the use of immunotherapy in Merkel cell carcinoma patients after they have had initial surgery and / or radiotherapy for the skin cancer. 👫 108 stage I-III Merkel cell carcinoma patients have been enrolled to date. 📍 20 sites are open across Australia and New Zealand, including regional towns. 🌟 Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare, highly aggressive form of skin cancer that metastasises quickly. Dr Wen Xu is a consultant medical oncologist at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane and senior lecturer at the University of Queensland with a special interest in melanoma and Merkel cell carcinoma research. Dr Xu is the elected Chair of AMIGOs and serving as Chair of Melanoma and Skin Cancer Trials Medical Oncology Discipline-Specific Advisory. Prof Anthony Joshua is Chair of the Australasian Ocular Melanoma Alliance (AOMA) and leads the Australian arm of the global Uveal Melanoma Registry. Prof Joshua leads the Department of Medical Oncology at the Kinghorn Cancer Centre, St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney, co-leads Translational Oncology at the Garvan Medical Research Institute and is a Professor at the St Vincent’s Clinical School, UNSW Sydney. 🧠 When melanoma spreads to the brain, it can lead to a challenging prognosis. Over a third of patients with advanced melanoma develop brain metastases, which can cause disabling neurologic complications and death.   Current therapies, including surgery, stereotactic radiotherapy, whole-brain radiation therapy, and chemotherapy have limited effect, which is why more research is needed to improve outcomes for these melanoma patients.   The BETTER trial is investigating a new treatment combination using immunotherapy drugs and targeted radiotherapy to enhance care and quality of life for symptomatic patients with melanoma brain metastases.    Patients with symptomatic melanoma brain metastases are usually excluded from clinical trials. By reducing the need for steroids and potentially minimising side effects, this trial may extend patient survival and improve quality of life.   Thanks to a generous donation from the Australian Skin Cancer Foundation, this trial is in start-up phase and is being prepared to open in Melbourne and Sydney. 🌟Young auctioneers Queensland event raises nearly $30,000 for Melanoma and Skin Cancer Trials 🌟   Last night at Tattersall's Club in Brisbane, young auctioneers, their families, friends, and industry representatives came together for the 2024 Australian Livestock and Property Agents Association (ALPA) Queensland Young Auctioneers Competition. As part of the event, an impressive $29,725 was raised for Melanoma and Skin Cancer Trials through a spirited charity auction.   The evening was a testament to the remarkable auctioneering talents of the 11 finalists, and showcased the ongoing generosity of the ALPA community.    Melanoma and Skin Cancer Trials was chosen as ALPA's 2024 charity and so far this year, ALPA has raised $91,075 to support our efforts to conquer melanoma and skin cancer through clinical trials.
