In response to NDIS Minister Bill Shorten saying he intends to change the rules about NDIS funding for intimacy supports for people with disability, Melba has issued a statement saying it "strongly supports everyone’s right to have the opportunity to explore their sexuality and engage in intimate relationships of their choice. A report by the Australian Human Rights Commission says hiring people with disability can boost productivity and morale in the workplace. Furthermore, studies have shown that people with disability take relatively fewer sick days than other employees, and are involved in fewer work, health and safety incidents. News that the NDIS taskforce plans to block moves to make it mandatory for all service providers to be registered is deeply disturbing. Unregistered providers – and there are close to 160,000 of them - are not required to complete independent external audits, screen staff for criminal history, or prove to the government that their staff have the right skills and competencies. This is particularly alarming when supporting a person with complex needs, where there is no independent oversight or advocacy for those most at risk. This compromises the well-being and safety of the people the NDIS was set up to support. Women with disability in Australia face disproportionately high rates of violence, with 65% experiencing violence since age 15 and being twice as likely as women without disability to face sexual violence. Despite this, their plight often remains overlooked in public discourse and policy. A new resource from Our Watch and Women with Disabilities Victoria highlights these issues and offers a Framework for Action to inform policymakers and the public.
