A great summary on the latest trends and viewpoints around AI in healthcare

Here is my summary of the key takeaways from the Healthcare Innovation Conference (HIC). It has been a wonderful three days catching up with lots of my favourite people and seeing some inspiring talks and case studies! #healthinnovation #HIC2024 🏥 - we should start thinking about EMRs as healthcare assets, not as traditional IT systems that need to show a ROI within x years. They are put in to deliver value and support future innovation, not to save money 🕰 - we are probably over-estimating what AI will deliver in health in the next 1-3 years, and under-estimating what it will deliver in 7-10 years 🔬 - specialities that involve 'seeing' something can be transferred to a machine to do much more easily, which is why we are seeing the most uptake to date of AI in radiology, ophthalmology, dermatology and pathology 👩⚕️ - in America, they are already using AI to quickly develop clinical notes, discharge summaries and referrals. They are also seeing a rise in 'ambient listening' where the tech listens to and transcribes the conversation, freeing up the clinician to focus on interacting with the patient rather than entering notes into the computer. This helps with patient empathy, as well as with keeping clinicians more in love with medicine 👻 - beware of 'hallucinations' - where the AI engine creates false information or omits genuine information 🛏 - less than a third of AI studies in health are actually looking at the effects on decision making, care delivery or patient outcomes - this is where our focus now needs to move towards 📅- people are finally looking at how we use this area to better support the back office and operational efficiencies, including rostering innovation (hurrah!!) 💡 - we are about to see an explosion of discovery and innovation - exciting times ahead! 1️⃣ - and finally, when feeling overwhelmed, remember that to make a difference we just need to "do one thing, about one thing".

Today at the Australasian Institute of Digital Health (AIDH) Digital Health Workforce Summit we got to hear further definitions about what this workforce is, how it has evolved over the last twenty years and the challenges it continues to face. The biggest change we are (finally!) seeing is the recognition that every role in healthcare is now part of the digital health environment, as aptly demonstrated in the new AIDH career pathways model 👉 https://lnkd.in/ey5y32Hw

A lovely evening facilitating the NSW AIDH branch event and networking with digital health colleagues. Fabulous presentations from Melissa Pollard and Sharen Ozcan about the work HealthShare do to support our hospitals as the largest public service shared service provider in Australia, including the reach and scale of the digital systems in use and how they impact on patient flow. Available to watch on AIDH TV for those who are members and couldn’t make it today!
