Hate speech is being broadcast everywhere, and the reality is that our queer youth are seeing these sentiments and attacks. So we need to be there. We need to show up and continue to create safe spaces, so they know they are loved and supported. We've seen the real-life difference a splash of purple or a rainbow makes. [C/W: Gender based discrimination and transphobia] Over the weekend we’ve seen transphobia and harmful discourse in the headlines regarding athletes’ bodies. Although it’s been focused on the Olympics, the misinformation and rhetoric being used by transphobes perpetuates harmful stereotypes and narratives. And it has very real consequences in our communities. To every young person out there: you deserve to play sport without discrimination. We know from experience that sport, and sporting clubs, can be the most wonderful, affirming and powerful spaces to find community. We also know that there can be significant barriers for LGBTQIA+ folks, and especially trans and gender diverse folks, to access these spaces. The amount of people who have jumped on the harmful bandwagon regarding “who should be able to compete” is a sign of the harmful attitudes we’re still up against. If you’re feeling disheartened and distressed about the news currently, the commentary surrounding Olympic athletes, and the transphobic misinformation out there – rest assured that we stand with you, now and always.
