Loneliness Awareness Week was observed earlier this month, to shine a spotlight on the shared experience of loneliness. While the focus is often on the loneliness experienced by people living with MND, carers can also face significant isolation and emotional challenges. The Australian Carers Guide have published an article outlining strategies carers can use to help combat feelings of loneliness, while caring for someone living with MND. Athelstone Football Club chose to support MNDSA at their MND & Past Players round on Saturday 13 July. The club ran a meat raffle and sausage sizzle, and sold MNDSA merchandise, raising funds and awareness in honour of one of the greatest Raggies and MNDSA client, Chris Grigg, who passed away from MND in 2022. Over the past 12 months, the Raggies have raised nearly $20,000 from events supporting MNDSA! Hear our Occupational Therapist, Jess talk about helping clients access powered wheelchairs! "Powered wheelchairs are invaluable for individuals with MND as it can enhance independence, mobility and access to the home and the community." If you would benefit from a powered wheelchair, an occupational therapist will spend time gathering information to ensure that the wheelchair chosen for you will provide the best postural support, comfort and outcomes for you. This process is called scripting." "If the wheelchair is being custom made for you, this will include discussion about the most appropriate joystick controls, specialised seating and electronic features that will be needed." "If you are hiring a wheelchair, your needs will be matched to existing stock to find the best fit. The wheelchair will then be adjusted as needed so it fits you well. This may include swapping the controller from the right to the left hand side, or changing the height of the backrest so it provides good support." "Training is provided to you and your supports on how to use and drive the wheelchair safely. Your confidence and competence may be fine after a few sessions, but if more support is needed, or if things start getting challenging, we are always here to help!" MNDSA proudly celebrates the successful outcome of our quality audit through the Australian Government Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission (ACQSC). We recently underwent an audit for quality service provision in Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) services at MNDSA. We are pleased to announce we have received successful achievement results of all audit criteria, across all 8 Aged Care Quality Standards. A robust audit process was undertaken by two ACQSC auditors, which included two full days of: - client, staff, executive and Board interviews; - an analysis and review of our work and service provision environment; - an analysis of the policies, processes, and procedures MNDSA has in place to care for our over 65-year-old CHSP clients; and - a full review of service delivery actions and outcomes. These results reflect MNDSA's dedication to providing quality services and care for all people affected by MND in South Australia.
