In February this year, a storm impacted the community of Mirboo North, knocking out power transmission lines and leaving 5000 homes without power. Over the past year, 180 NAB colleagues were mobilised as part of the NAB Foundation recovery crew, Disaster Relief Australia's corporate and community volunteer army. But it takes many hands to rebuild after a disaster, so this time we joined forces with both DRA and AFL - Australian Football League to help the community get back on its feet. Work to fix storm damage in the community continues, and as Australians face more frequent natural disasters, there’s a growing need to help communities become more resilient. We're playing our part through volunteering and NAB Ready Together - a flagship program to help Australians withstand and recover from natural disasters. Payment alerts in the NAB App and Internet Banking have helped our customers avoid more than $100m in potential scams in 15 months. Read more below. ⬇ New insights out today also reveal: 📌Customer scam reports increased by around 10% between October 2023 and March 2024 compared to the same period a year beforehand, while customer losses decreased by around 17%. 🚩Since we announced last July we were removing links from SMSes, we’ve sent more than 40 million text messages to customers without links. That’s 40 million moments in 12 months where we’ve been able to make banking safer for our customers by making it easier to distinguish if a text message from NAB is legitimate. Stopping the crime before it happens is the only way we can stop criminals targeting Australians. We can, and will, do more.

Throughout the month of June NAB colleagues have celebrated Pride Month with our new Shimmer Wall.  Built by NAB customer Electric Confetti, the new Pride star aligns with the pride progress flag and has additional colours including blue, white, pink, black and brown. "Our people make us who we are here at NAB and we wanted to honour the diversity of our LGBTQIA+ community. I love that this new design means that more colleagues can see themselves in in the star as we continue this important work," NAB Pride Co-Chair and Specialised Lending Executive Julie Patterson said.   Electric Confetti founder Natalie Jarvis helped to design the wall, bringing NAB’s new Pride Star to life. "We were honoured to do this job, working with the Pride team to translate the Pride Star into a stunning shimmer wall. We stand for everyone having a voice and the ability to be heard and we’re proud to ‘reflect’ this in our special reflective medium," Natalie said. "Mapping out the new Pride Star and choosing the right colours to bring joy to this space was the ultimate job, and we enjoyed working with the wonderful NAB Pride team."

“You want to be the best alarm system on the street.” In a panel discussion at the Australian Banking Association (ABA) Conference yesterday, NAB CEO Andrew Irvine discussed how the industry was responding to key issues including housing, cost-of-living, and scams and fraud. Mr Irvine described scams and fraud as the scourge of our times. “We have and will continue to work hard as an industry whilst educating Australians to protect themselves,” he said.

If you’ve ever found yourself floating atop the rainbow of coral and sea life on the Great Barrier Reef or face to face with a prehistoric cassowary in the depths of the Daintree Rainforest, you’ve probably passed through a North Queensland Airports (NQA) airport.     Located at the gateway to Australia’s tropical north, NQA operate Cairns and Mackay airports, with clear environmental and sustainability goals.    "We have three areas that we’re focussing on – emissions reductions, indigenous engagement, and biodiversity,” says Michele Wong, Chief Financial Officer of NQA.    Determined to break the stereotype of the industry, North Queensland Airports continues to innovate and become market leaders in sustainable practices, says Chief Executive Officer Richard Barker.    “We’ve set a clear pathway for being net zero for Scope 1 and 2. We’re on track to achieve that by 2025 and we’ll be one of the first airports in Australasia,” says Mr Barker. “We’re working hard with a local proponent on the production of sustainable aviation fuel, which is really going to be one of the keys to reduce the primary emissions from aircraft flight. “There’s a real opportunity for North Queensland to take a leading position both in Australia and globally.    In this latest episode of Road to Zero, David Gall, Group Executive Corporate and Institutional Banking chats with the team at NQA, about their decarbonisation journey and how they’re positively contributing towards the local biodiversity.

With the end of financial year just days away, we’re urging hard-working Australian employees and small businesses to remain vigilant for scams impersonating the Australian Taxation Office. The ATO received 22,000 reports of criminals impersonating the government department in the past 12 months. Reports increased 34% between March and April this year.  A common red flag of tax time scams is being asked to click on a link in a text message. Like NAB, the ATO does not send links in SMSes.      Read more about how to protect yourself, business, family and friends from these scams below.

When natural disasters strike, local community organisations are often the first ones rolling up their sleeves to help get their neighbours back on their feet. That’s why we’re proud to announce that NAB Foundation is awarding $600,000 to projects that build resilience across Australia through its Community Grants program. Twenty-six organisations including the Australian Wildlife Conservancy will each receive funding of up to $25,000 to go towards a range of initiatives - from environmental restoration and emergency planning to new infrastructure and equipment, and the sharing of knowledge through training.
