A great move for the mental health of Australia's working population.
Millions of Australians will now be able to clock off from their work shifts without having to be available after hours. Under right to disconnect laws, employees from today will have the right to refuse contact outside their working hours — including calls and emails — unless that refusal is unreasonable. According to a recent government report, Australia is short about 2460 full-time GPs. This number is expected to get worse, predicted to rise to 5560 by the year 2033. Rural and remote communities in Australia are already facing a health crisis. More needs to be done to retain our GPs – this is why we’re so passionate about supporting rural doctors with our GPs4RuralDocs program. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children living in remote Australia face some of the worst health outcomes in the country. At the same time, rural healthcare staff face immense pressure, with fewer resources and less support than their urban counterparts. These two factors can both compromise the quality of care provided to children and present significant challenges in the Australian rural workforce. We were pleasantly surprised to find that through our evaluation of the third birthday party initiative, a joint partnership with Queensland Health, local health services, and Starlight Children's Foundation Australia aimed at supporting the health and healthcare participation among children turning three in Cherbourg and Charleville (rural towns in Queensland), had significant benefits for the staff and students involved. I'll be presenting our findings at the 17th National Rural Health Conference with the National Rural Health Alliance next month, and I'd love to see all your lovely faces there!
