Great excitement on Manmoyi’s bush trip today where students learnt how to collect water from the djidjirok tree! 🤩 The water from this tree can be used to treat dehydration and tastes a little salty.

Today’s article in The Australian remote education series highlights a few of the great things happening out bush. It is a huge win for everyone!  I was interviewed by Caroline a while back and we spoke about the place of technology in remote communities and on Country programs. I will always advocate for what these schools and communities want and need, bar none.  Whilst we are in print here with ‘Outback tech’, we wouldn’t be able do it without the collaboration and partnerships of so many stakeholders and communities mentioned throughout. Last night we celebrated the Northern Territory Science Week Awards for 2023, and what an event. So many wonderful STEM Superstars together to acknowledge the truly fabulous things happening in our little world. A HUGE showing from our remote communities and local schools which was amazing. The highlights: 🤩 Nawarddeken Academy and Culture Tech were the very proud recipients of the “Remote Community” award - presented to a project or individual that has contributed to the increased interest, representation or participation of the general public in STEAM in remote communities. This award is just the icing on the cake, and completely unexpected from everyone. It’s an award for community, by community, supported by Bininj and Balanda from the outstations of Mamadawerre, Manmoyi and Kabulwarnamyo. 📸Two students of Nawarddeken topping the Territory in the SCOPE Awards for their age groups - a photomicography award - getting up close and personal with their land and stories. Big kamak to Sham (Upper Primary) and Maureen (Senior) for their achievements. Watch this space. 👚🤷🏼♀️ 🌱Cara Penton with a such well deserved acknowledgement with the “Promoting Women and Girls in STEM Representation” award - a tireless advocate for the Daluk Ranger and Ecology program with Warddeken Land Management Limited and being a great touch point for the school and our emerging STEM daluk and yawk yawk. 🤖 Great work by Dhupuma Barker College with the “Remote Schools” award for the ongoing robotics program, sending the Djirrikitj Firebirds all the way to the USA this year for the Vex World Championships. 🥰 So many truly wonderful things happening in some of the most remote places of the NT. The barriers to success are becoming smaller because of things like this.
