  • The 2019-20 Black Summer Bushfires hit hard in the small NSW town of Cobargo. Following the bushfires, community consultation sessions were held to discuss what was needed to help the community recover from the fires. A key concern was energy security and resilience. The community wanted to make sure in future they wouldn't lose power, water, and communications for weeks after an event. Using funding from the Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants Program the community is building their resilience for the future by investing in renewable energy. North Queensland communities are continuing their recovery journey from the 2023-2024 Higher Risk Weather Season. We joined Senator Tony Sheldon on a recent visit to Cairns Regional Council, Douglas Shire Council and Palm Island Aboriginal Shire Council. It was a great opportunity to speak directly with community members to understand the improvements that have been made and the ongoing recovery efforts. During our time up north, we also visited the James Cook University Cyclone Testing Station to discuss how we can utilise their research to build resilience to cyclones. It takes collaboration to rebuild and strengthen community resilience. Listening and learning from communities is part of our locally led approach to disaster risk reduction. #TeamNEMA #NorthQueensland

Earlier this month, we held our fifth Critical Infrastructure Security Excellence Workshop for 2024, this time in Canberra! The program was packed with representatives from industry, Commonwealth and ACT Governments, presenting to attendees from across Australia's critical infrastructure sectors.   Our panel discussion on an all-hazards approach to risk management rounded out a fantastic day of collaboration with industry!   Chaired by Director Sophie Bazzana, our expert panel members Caitlin Bell, Assistant Coordinator General at National Emergency Management Agency, Director & Co-Founder of GRC4, George Dionisopoulos MSyI, M.ISMI®, MIEAust, M.ISRM, and Rebecca Gurney, General Manager Enterprise Risk at St Vincent’s Health Australia, answered audience questions on best practice approaches to uplift maturity in risk management, and discussed how adequately addressing all-hazards ensures the community is supported when incidents do occur.   The next workshop will be in Hobart on 17 September, register today 👉 https://lnkd.in/gkzunAPB

  • We’re strengthening our preparedness for disasters with a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).   The MOU comes ahead of the 2024-25 Higher Risk Weather Season, strengthening our deep relationship and providing Australian communities with an additional level of reassurance and support.   Australians have already benefited from the strong relationship with Singapore. The SCDF helped during the 2022 Eastern Australia Floods, through deployment of two Flood Rescue Technician teams who integrated with NSW State Emergency Service and Fire and Rescue NSW.   This partnership with Singapore builds on other existing international MOUs Australia has with Public Safety Canada | Sécurité publique Canada, National Emergency Management Agency (NZ) and FEMA in the United States of America.

[Memorandum of Understanding between SCDF and the Australia National Emergency Management Agency] Earlier today, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between SCDF and the Australia National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). The MOU was signed by Comr Eric Yap, Commissioner, SCDF, and Mr Brendan Moon AM, Coordinator-General, Australia NEMA. This MOU marks the formation of a cooperation framework that will facilitate the swift deployment of mutual humanitarian assistance and disaster relief during emergency situations. We look forward to the close collaboration with Australia NEMA towards our shared mission of protecting and saving lives and property 🤝 Photo 2: Mr Brendan Moon AM, Coordinator-General, Australia NEMA (seated, left) and Comr Eric Yap (seated, right), Commissioner, SCDF, signing the MOU. The signing was witnessed by His Excellency Allaster Cox, Australian High Commissioner to Singapore (standing, left); and Assoc Prof Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Minister of State (MOS) for the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of National Development (standing, right).

We’re trialling using virtual reality (VR) to help mitigate and prepare for disasters 💻 Using event data and town mapping to build 3D models, our data team created a representation of the 2022 floods in Lismore, New South Wales. We recently showcased this to Lismore City Council Mayor, Cr Steve Krieg. VR technology has huge potential to support decision-making, particularly in the context understanding the scale of disasters, damage and risk reduction. We’re developing ways to automate this capability for use during the upcoming Higher Risk Weather Season. The aim is to help emergency services and local communities to both learn from past disasters and simulate future scenarios.
