Meet Dr Jo Burnand, Acting Medical Director at Health Education and Training Institute (HETI). In 2016 Jo competed in the Australian Paralympic Team at Rio as the coxswain in the Mixed coxed four Para-rowing team. It was Australia’s first ever boat to qualify for a Paralympic Games in that class. The coxswain is the coach in the boat and responsible for steering a straight course, as well as being the race tactician and motivating the crew. Jo says there are a lot of parallels between competing in sport at an elite level and medical leadership. “Much like rowing, working in health is ultimately a team endeavour. At HETI, my role is to lead and support the team which provides oversight of medical education and training, particularly of early career doctors. While it was a great privilege to represent Australia in rowing, it is also a great privilege to work with NSW Health and to know that what we do in supporting medical education and training makes a difference to doctors working in our hospitals and ultimately to their patients.” Want to be like Jo and join the team enriching health in millions of ways every day? Don’t miss Multicultural Health Week from 2-8 September, 2024.

We are excited to announce the theme of Multicultural Health Week 2024 - Celebrate culture through food with multicultural family lunchboxes. From 2–8 September, we’ll focus on promoting healthy eating in our diverse communities. It is also our great pleasure to announce that our community champion, one of Australia’s favourite chefs Adam Liaw , will be promoting healthy eating with his multicultural family lunchbox recipes for school, work, or a day out. "I’m delighted to be part of Multicultural Health Week this year. Coming from a migrant family, I understand the unique challenges and barriers that multicultural communities may experience in accessing food and practising healthy eating. I believe whatever your background or culture, the way you eat at home can easily be your inspiration for healthy eating." said Adam. Multicultural Health Week 2024 is coordinated by NSW Multicultural Health Communication Service (MHCS) with the Centre for Population Health, Ministry of Health NSW Health , and Cancer Institute NSW. This week is Homelessness Week. NSW Health is committed to working across the health system to improve outcomes for people who are in social housing, who are homeless or at risk of experiencing homelessness. The Housing and Mental Health Agreement 2022 (HMHA 22) is an agreement with the Department of Communities and Justice which recognises that housing and mental health are closely related. Having a safe and secure place to call home is a fundamental foundation for health and wellbeing. In turn, having good health and wellbeing helps people to sustain housing and access housing supports. Read the agreement here: https://lnkd.in/gVf4qEK8
