𝟯𝗚 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 📱📡 The upcoming closure of the 3G network by Australian mobile network carriers, Telstra and Optus has been extended until 28 October 2024. The extension will allow customers more time to prepare for the 3G closure, which is part of a broader industry shift towards more advanced 4G and 5G technologies. The decommissioning of these networks may pose some public safety risks for NSW residents who rely solely on 3G devices. Without updating to devices capable of accessing 4G and 5G mobile networks, communities may face difficulties accessing vital online services or calling 000 in the event of an emergency. We encourage individuals to check if their devices will be impacted by the switchover date by texting ‘3’ to ‘3498’. Our Acting Managing Director James Pickens recently presented at the fourth Australasian Critical Communications Forum (ACCF) CCBitesize webinar on the work being done towards a national, interoperable Public Safety Mobile Broadband (PSMB) and the development of PSMB capability in NSW. A national PSMB capability will provide emergency services with access to high-speed mobile data services and improve responses to critical incidents. While our work to advance the PSMB is underway, we are currently working on tactical and specific solutions for emergency services within NSW. James shared how we are codesigning, testing and advising on emerging technologies that can keep emergency services connected when existing infrastructure fails or is unavailable. He also provided a work stream update on the Inter-Governmental Agreement between states, territories and the Commonwealth, and the next steps in the PSMB journey. The Bitesize sessions, organised by the ACCF chapter of TCCA-Critical Communications, are curated to give the latest insights from the frontline – with expert presentations on the status, transition and future of critical communications. As we head closer to bushfire season, we're supporting the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) to deliver upgraded satellite technology to ensure crews remain safer and more connected during emergencies. 🚒📡 The Vehicle as a Node (VaaN) technology using Starlink satellites will ensure NSW RFS personnel can communicate effectively during a disaster, even in remote locations, or if communications infrastructure is damaged. Critically, the technology also enables crews to live stream video of fires from anywhere in the state. Installations begin this year to fit more than 5,000 RFS operational vehicles with the new technology as part of a $69 million VaaN project. At the recent Tech in Gov Expo in Canberra, our acting Chief Digital and Technology Officer Daniel Wright delivered a speech on improving digital connectivity in regional NSW. He spoke about the importance of collaborating with industry and government to bridge the digital divide and ensure access to high-quality connectivity services for all, regardless of location. He shared some of Telco’s key collaborative initiatives such as the NSW Digital Connectivity Index and Digital Inclusion Strategy. Daniel also participated on the panel, ‘Critical connections in transformation: The challenges of Departments and Industries working together,’ where he reaffirmed Telco’s commitment to improving connectivity across NSW. Tech in Gov is the most comprehensive cross-sector event for government, IT, and executive level professionals in Australia.
