Meet Deesha ... Deesha is one of many students to have recently spent time learning at The Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) School. For over 40 years, The RDH Hospital School has been supporting children who present to hospital with a range of ailments, from broken bones to chronic illness. During her time in hospital, Deesha engaged in a variety of activities, including reading and playing educational board games. “My favourite subject has been art. I have also been playing scrabble with my teacher, Ruth,” Deesha said. Whilst admitted to RDH, children aged four to 17 years old are able to access the school, providing an opportunity for young patients to continue their education and re-engage with mainstream schooling. The Hospital School operates from Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:30am – 3:00pm and is closed during general school holidays. TEN-HUT! Last month Gove District Hospital (GDH) became the first civilian hospital to host health professionals from the Australian Army's 2nd Health Brigade, as part of an initiative to help bolster hospital capabilities during Exercise Predators Run. Exercise Predator’s Run is the Army’s biggest training exercise for the year and involves moving from island to island by barge, setting off from Nhulunbuy. GDH staff members 'saluted' the brigade for approaching their work with respect and openness. "I was impressed by the exceptional qualities demonstrated by the Army personnel throughout their time at the hospital," Dr Rajendra Pillay, GDH Regional Director of Medical Services, said. Adding to the excitement, for the first time in over a decade, the brigade's helicopter landed over the picturesque green grass of GDH, creating a spectacle for staff and local community.

A high-flying hello for our patients! Children at Katherine Hospital and Royal Darwin Hospital were recently treated to visits from several Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), U.S Air Force and Japan Air-Defence Force members, as part of Exercise Pitch Black 2024. The Exercise participants took time off from training in the skies over the Top End to brighten the day of Territory children spending time in hospital.     The visits were a run(a)way success, with paper planes, Air Force posters, stickers and wrist bands among some of the exciting goodies given out to children during the visits. Held every two years, Exercise Pitch Black focuses on large force employment missions which involve large numbers of international aircrafts. This year's Exercise was the biggest yet, with 20 nations, over 140 aircraft and approximately 4,435 personnel participating.  Thank you to the RAAF and international visitors who made sure NT hospitals were part of the historic event!

Alice Springs is an important place for Australian research. Its large geographical space, diversity of population and disease make it ripe for ground breaking research. Demi is the Teletrials nurse coordinator for Alice Springs Hospital. She overlooks the administration, stakeholder engagement and policy for clinical trials in the hospital. It’s a vital role to keep the wheels in motion for NT Health researchers in Central Australia. “It’s interesting to be involved in something with impact. Our work contributes to the better health outcomes in Central Australia,” Demi said. A Teletrial is a clinical trial that is delivered closer to home, particularly for regional, rural and remote patients. It includes groups of clinical trials sites that work together under the supervision of a lead clinician. Demi has 8 years’ experience as a nurse, so she can apply clinical and practical knowledge to her work. She is excited to see research continue to grow in Central Australia. “I wish I had access to research in my time as a nurse, and so I want to now advocate for better access for practitioners,” Demi said. It has been a busy start to the month for our Sexual Health and Blood Borne Viruses team with World Hepatitis Day, followed by hosting two big events – ‘Managing Hepatitis B’ training and the 14th Australasian Viral Hepatitis Conference. At the interactive training, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workforce team from the NT and around Australia joined to learn hepatitis B epidemiology, transmission, prevention, liver anatomy and physiology and health promotion. The facilitators and participants shared their experiences, including care, management, treatment and support for living with hepatitis B. 🙌 The conference saw researchers, community members, health professionals and policymakers come together to help eliminate viral hepatitis through collaboration, innovation and commitment. 👏 A big shout out to Menzies School of Health Research, ASHM and the Burnet Institute who supported the training and/or sponsored participants to attend through scholarships. 🤝
