"I remember walking into a job interview, feeling prepared and ready to impress. As I sat across from a male and female interviewer, I found my focus largely with the male at the table. His dominant personality allowed me to assume he held the position of power in the room. I was surprised to realise post interview that the hiring manager and higher ranked individual was the female, and I may have missed an opportunity to build rapport with the ultimate decision maker. The experience made me realise that, despite my commitment to women empowerment and my belief that I hold no biases, I had easily fallen prey to unconscious bias in a high-pressure situation." The duty of care to protect the mental health of employees is not only good practice, it is a legislative requirement. So the team at PKF Integrity partnered with the Governance Institute of Australia to help raise awareness and understanding of how we, as leaders, can best build psychological safety in the workplace. In a recent series of events, we explored key considerations such as: * the role of management in reinforcing a zero-tolerance culture * the importance of thorough, fair, and transparent investigations * the importance of identifying psychosocial hazards and implementing/documenting appropriate controls * the potential of micro-management becoming a psychosocial issue in modern working arrangements, such as hybrid, working from home and office * how an annual psychosocial training program can alternate between online and in-person delivery methods and be highly effective * how to deal with the situation where an employee notifies the employer of an issue, but does not want any action to be taken.
