"Nature is priceless, but hard work isn't. Putting a price on peoples' efforts to conserve nature can only help to protect it. Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IP&LCs) steward 80% of the world's remaining biodiversity, so flowing finance to community is critical to reaching our global nature positive goals." – Jane Hutchinson Pollination Foundation Co-CEO. Together with a collective of partners, we synthesised high-level insights and identified the pillars of activity critical for IP&LCs to access and lead nature credit projects. The findings underpin the design of an initiative to align IP&LC, donors, and corporates to incubate and scale nature credit projects together. We launched Pollination Foundation in 2020 knowing that standing up a not-for-profit within a start-up company, based on partnerships with communities, at the beginning of the COVID wouldn’t be easy. But, with an awareness of the size and scale of the challenges in front of us, we knew we needed to do business differently. Two of the main things we’ve learned are that we can only move at the speed of trust and that system-level change is slow-moving and requires sustained effort from a diversity of people and organisations—often over decades. As we forge new pathways with our partners, sharing what we learn (including the steps to achieving ambitious goals) is just as important as reaching our final destination. Our hope is that our past experiences provide others with insights and learning to move forward with confidence. Interested in learning more?
