The Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council (QAIHC) is far more than a non-government organisation, we are a health sector leader that is present across the whole of Queensland. The ACCHO sector is fundamental to Queensland's health system, offering holistic and culturally safe care from the Torres Strait to the Gold Coast and west to Charleville and Mt Isa. We support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in remote, regional, and metropolitan areas. Our Members face challenges like insufficient funding, poor access to essentials, chronic diseases, and workforce shortages with determination and resilience. And they drive improvements through community-led, culturally appropriate solutions. We spoke with QAIHC and ACCHO workers about the top issues for the upcoming Queensland election. The Queensland Election could be a transformative moment for health equity among the state's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. QAIHC Acting CEO Paula Arnol is calling on our elected leaders to work collaboratively with and for our communities. As the 2024 Queensland Election nears, we challenge Queensland’s major political parties to commit to genuine partnerships and real investments in First Nations health. Given the critical juncture we stand at, following the failed referendum and underperformance of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap, it’s time to recognise and fund our sector as an integral part of the health system. The 2024-2025 Commonwealth Budget reveals key commitments to First Nations health, focusing on communicable disease control, mental health, and suicide prevention. However, QAIHC Chairman Matthew Cooke expressed significant disappointment, stating that the budget does not adequately address Indigenous health needs nor respond to the Australian Productivity Commission’s findings on Closing the Gap. With $94.9 million dedicated to health strategies, including vaccination uptake and STI testing, the budget leaves many questions about the government's priorities unanswered. How cool is this? Taeg Twist, QAIHC Youth Hub Network Coordinator, participated in the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in New York. Taeg's selection, through the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME), was based on a fantastic proposal for the 'Youth Guardians' project, aiming to foster youth environmental stewardship. Taeg received extensive preparation through a two-day diplomacy training program, enabling effective participation in the Forum’s discussions. The trip encompassed two weeks of valuable meetings, discussions, and cultural exchanges. Congratulations Kalwun Development Corporation Ltd on 30 years of supporting community health.
On this day 30 years ago Kalwun Development Corporation Ltd was official incorporated and the rest is history. What an amazing journey and a testament to all who have been involved in the company over the past 30 years. Whilst our establishment dates back to the 1980’s, as the Gold Coast Aboriginal and Islander Housing Coop Society, the transition to Kalwun in 1994 signified a purposeful strategy to diversify our offerings and become resolute in our mission to provide a comprehensive suite of health and humans services for the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. Kalwun’s evolution has been marked by resilience, compassion, and deep-rooted dedication to improving the lives of those we serve. Please take the time today to reflect on those who have come before you, and pay respects to the struggles, trials and triumphs that have afforded you the privilege and opportunity to work at Kalwun today. In closing, I thank each and every one you for your ongoing commitment and dedication to Kalwun and our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. Keep that fire burning!!
