Melbourne's marketplace for over 140 years.

About us

The Queen Victoria Market has been Melbourne’s marketplace since 1878. It is loved by locals and remains among the top international tourist destinations in Victoria. For over 140 years, the Market still operates as a traditional market and has been recognised as an historic place by Heritage Victoria and is registered on the National heritage list. As the largest open air market in the Southern Hemisphere, the 'Vic Market' houses more than 500 small businesses, including of a wide variety of fresh food traders and a large number of general merchandise traders, plus seasonal night market food and specialty shopping traders. The Queen Victoria Market Pty Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of the City of Melbourne. Queen Victoria Market Pty Ltd is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Market. The company vision of the Queen Victoria Market Pty Ltd is to create a thriving and diverse marketplace for future generations. This is achieved through being responsive to customer needs, creating a platform for small businesses to prosper, and realising social, economic and environmental benefits for stakeholders. The Queen Victoria Market and surrounding precinct is currently progressing through a five-year program of restoration and renewal, begun in 2017. Known as the Queen Victoria Market Precinct Renewal (QVMPR) program, the $250 million City of Melbourne program is the biggest investment in the council’s history.

Get to know our newest trader in the Purpose Precinct, the Moving Feast Kitchen. With a focus on circular economy and sustainability, the Moving Feast Kitchen transforms food waste into innovative, new products.  This #PlasticFreeJuly, Chris Locke shares how they, as a business, reduce plastic waste in their kitchen, including: ♻ Replacing plastic-loaded green sponges with bio-degradable scrubbies made from recycled coffee sacks.  ♻ Removing cling wrap, baking parchment, aluminium foil from their processes.  ♻ Products sold in glass containers, that can be reused and refilled with other products from across the Market.  You can purchase a range of condiments, sauces and foods created by the Moving Feast Kitchen at the STREAT Cafe on Peel Street.  Learn more about our sustainability practices here: https://lnkd.in/g3t3J22W #ShopSustainably #ShopLocal

This July, we’re highlighting our Market community doing their bit to redefine how we use and consume plastic. Meet long-time trader, Boyce, who runs the Soapbox on Victoria Street.  With a focus on refillable home products, the Soapbox offers a range of soaps, detergents and cleaning products for your home. Boyce encourages customers to bring their own bottles or containers to fill up on bulk laundry liquids, dishwashing soap, and more.  On the importance of shopping sustainably, Boyce believes that no matter how small the contribution is, it all helps in the long run.  Visit Boyce at the Soapbox in Victoria Street every Market day! The Moving Feast Pantry, at Purpose Precinct, at Queen Victoria Market, is now open, focusing on social enterprise products that do social, environmental, and cultural good. Good which is being captured in the Purpose Precinct impact tracker, link below, showing you just how much good each purchase adds up to. The Pantry is also displaying the delicious circular products coming out of the Moving Feast Kitchen a few doors down. In the kitchen, STREAT’s Eco-Chef, Chris Locke, can be seen innovating and testing new product ideas, made from unsold and overripe produce from the Queen Victoria Market’s stallholders. One of the first products hitting the shelves, made by STREAT in the Moving Feast Kitchen, is a vegan XO sauce, made from sweet potato. Recently, we were delighted to have diverted 300kgs of unsold sweet potatoes, saving them from going to compost. Instead, most of it was turned into this vegan XO sauce, which will add a depth of flavour to any dish you add it to. Chris has also been testing an array of other sweet potato-based delights, including sweet potato brownies, sweet potato soy-free soy sauce and sweet potato miso. Keep an eye on our socials to see what’s new from the kitchen, and the range of awesome social enterprises we’re showcasing at the pantry, and, of course, visit the Purpose Precinct next time you’re in Melbourne CBD. The Moving Feast Kitchen and Moving Feast Pantry are both located in the Purpose Precinct, in the F sheds at the Queen Victoria Market, with a newly-opened STREAT cafe sharing the space, to make sure you’re perfectly caffeinated for grocery shopping.
