What are the Bars in the Legislative Assembly Chamber? The heavy brass rail at the rear of the Chamber, and two wooden rails on either side of the Speaker’s chair are known as the Bars. When the House is in session, only Members and select staff—such as Clerks at the Table and parliamentary attendants—are allowed beyond the Bars. When a division is called and the bells stop ringing, the Speaker requests the parliamentary attendants to close the Bars. During this time, no Members can enter or leave until they are reopened after the division is resolved.

Yesterday, we began stamping all books acquired this year with a special commemorative stamp to mark the 150th anniversary of Denis O'Donovan’s appointment as Queensland Parliamentary Librarian. O'Donovan, who served as Queensland Parliamentary Librarian from 1874 to 1902, played a pivotal role in acquiring and cataloguing an extraordinary collection of books, serials, and maps. Have a look at this selection of heritage nails from the original build of Queensland Parliament House! 🛠️ These handcrafted nails were uncovered by our heritage carpenter during restorations of heritage windows in the O'Donovan Library. They feature the distinctive hand-hammered square head and tapered square shaft design seen in other historical nails discovered in colonial buildings throughout Queensland and Australia, all hand-forged by convicts in the 1800s. These nails are just a small glimpse into the historical construction materials that have been preserved and remain functional from the original build of Queensland Parliament House over 150 years ago!
