✌️MEET THE TEAM✌ Rithy – Bookkeeper and Senior Administrator. My name is Pum Rithy, and I was born into a poor family in a rural village. When I was in primary school, my mother always encouraged me to study, because she knew that education was the key to a better future. Unfortunately, only my youngest sister and I were able to graduate with bachelor's degrees. My oldest brother only finished grade 6, and my second older brother only finished grade 9, due to our family's financial issues. In 2005, when I was studying in grade 12, my entire family moved to Siem Reap because my mother had to sell our rice fields to pay back a family loan. When we moved to Siem Reap, my second brother became a tuk-tuk driver, my dad became an ice cream seller, my mother stayed at home, and my youngest sister was in primary school. My second brother and my dad worked hard to earn money to support our family. After I finished grade 12 in 2005, I moved to Siem Reap with my family and looked for a job to earn money to support my family. After my second brother got married, he and his wife decided to run a non-profit local NGO called the Green Gecko Project. At that time, my sister-in-law asked me to work at the organisation with deliveries and cleaning. After working as a food delivery person and cleaner for a few years, I was promoted to Child Group Leader. When I worked as a group leader, I was very passionate about it because I loved working with children, and I felt that I could also help my local community. During this time, I enrolled in English classes and continued my bachelor's degree in accounting at the University of Southeast Asia (USEA). After working as a group leader for many years, I was promoted to Operations Manager at the Green Gecko Project. In this position, I worked very closely with children and their parents to communicate with them and the Green Gecko director. The bookkeeper and administrative person in charge resigned from his job, so I was asked to take on those responsibilities as well. Due to the Green Gecko's plan to have all families live independently, my workload decreased significantly in 2020. In November 2021, I passed an interview for a part-time job at Safe Haven as a bookkeeper, and I worked there for one and a half years. For over a year now, I've had the privilege of being part of the incredible team at REACH Siem Reap, serving as a bookkeeper and administrator. I've witnessed firsthand the transformative power of our programs and how REACH makes a profound difference in the lives of countless children in Siem Reap who would otherwise lack access to essential education, nutrition and hygiene. My passion for REACH's mission stems from seeing the tangible impact we've made over the years, providing opportunities to those who need them most. It's been a rewarding journey, and I remain as committed as ever to our cause. . . . #REACHsiemreap #REACHteam #meettheteam

We love seeing our guardians volunteer in the REACH kitchen and garden! For our families, volunteering is more than just preparing meals – it's a special moment to connect with their children and nurture them. 👨👩👦 The joy on children's faces when they see their parents serving them lunch is priceless! It's a beautiful reminder of how education and family support go hand in hand. 💙 . . . #REACHsiemreap

Thank you Shelford Girls' Grammar for endorsing our work. 💙📚

This year we have been very fortunate to connect with Shelfordian Emily Williamson and learn about the important work she is doing in Siem Reap Cambodia as the founder of REACH Siem Reap. Emily graduated from Shelford in 2010 before continuing her education at Swinburne University. Having spent a life split between Asia and Australia, Emily was always eager to immerse herself in different cultures and communities.  She visited Cambodia for the first time as an 18-year-old, and this was a turning point in her life. With the country and the Cambodian people leaving such a huge impact on her, she returned to volunteer several times before deciding at age 23 to pack up her life and move to Siem Reap. Unbeknownst to her, this decision would shape her entire career. Once in Cambodia, she worked for several years in marketing and fundraising before forming a vision of what could be and the incredible impact a well-run non-government organisation (NGO) could achieve for local communities. And so, REACH Siem Reap was born.     In a recent Student Voice assembly Emily shared with us valuable insights into the ethos of the REACH Foundation and the powerful impact an individual can have on their community and beyond. The stories and examples she shared highlighted the importance of local empowerment and collaboration, reminding us all of the profound difference that can be made when we come together for a common cause. Emily’s journey from Shelford to Siem Reap serves as a powerful example to us of what can be achieved with passion, dedication, and a strong sense of purpose.    As a school we have committed to supporting REACH Siem Reap for the remainder of 2024 through numerous awareness and fundraising campaigns. So please, Shelfordians and Shelford community, follow and support this wonderful organisation making a difference on a daily basis.
