As National Reconciliation Week 2024 draws to a close, we acknowledge reconciliation is everyone’s business, every day of the year. This week has been the time to make our commitment known and heard. We raised up our collective voices and showed our support for a more just, equitable and reconciled Australia. During #NRW2024 we shared a critical message for you to shout out: Now. More. Than. Ever. Now More Than Ever, we need justice. Now More Than Ever, we need equity. Now More Than Ever, we need a more reconciled Australia. But if we are to continue this message every day of the year, we must not accept the status quo. We cannot stand for more of the same and we will not tolerate racism, injustice and exclusion. So beyond #NRW2024, reflect on how you can contribute to these missions where you live, work and play. What Can You Do? 1️⃣ Stay Engaged: Pay attention to what's happening in your communities, workplaces, schools, and local government. Be vigilant against efforts to roll back gains. 2️⃣ Stand Up: Take action and call out racism. Racism is about power and inequity, and it's not enough to be non-racist; we must be actively anti-racist. 3️⃣ Listen Well: Show up and stay hopeful. Listening to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices is crucial for progress. Continue to support and amplify First Nations voices. https://lnkd.in/fRGry5x #NowMoreThanEver #Reconciliation

4 August is National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day. National Children’s Day gives all Australians the opportunity to show their support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and learn about the impact that culture, family and community play in the life of every child. This year’s theme is, ‘Strong in Culture, Stronger Together’. If First Nations children are strong in culture, then they are strong in their identity, and this is important for future generations to come. Reconciliation Australia congratulates Yanyuwa Garrawa woman Senator Malarndirri McCarthy on her appointment as Minister for Indigenous Australians. “Senator McCarthy brings a unique and strong mix of political, media, cultural, and life experience to this key position,“ Reconciliation Australia CEO, Karen Mundine said. “She has long encouraged all Australians to embark on the journey of reconciliation and consider how to work together to create a reconciled country that takes pride in 65,000+ years of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and connection to Country. “Her decades in public life show her strength and depth of understanding of issues when dealing both with communities and with the highest levels of government. “Senator McCarthy played a core role in the ALP becoming the first political party to launch a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). “As the third Indigenous person to hold this Ministry and we look forward to continuing a strong relationship with Senator McCarthy as we work together in advancing reconciliation and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.” Statement: https://bit.ly/3LIn0Rp Read more via NITV: https://bit.ly/4fneZyL #Reconciliation

Statement from Karen Mundine, Reconciliation Australia CEO, on the resignation of the Hon Linda Burney MP. On behalf of Reconciliation Australia, I pay tribute to Minister Linda Burney for her decades of work and commitment to First Nations peoples, reconciliation, and Australia. As a former member of the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation, Linda is a tireless and long-time supporter of state and local reconciliation groups and movements. I have known her for most of my life and my entire reconciliation career and know first-hand her dedication and belief in this work. Her legacy will be marked by her resilience, intelligence and integrity, shining a light on the pathway to reconciliation and justice. More than most, Linda knows and constantly reminds us of the important part we all need to play as we work together towards a reconciled future. Minister Burney finishes this stage of her career as the first Aboriginal woman to hold the Federal Ministry for Indigenous Australians, a position she accepted graciously and a role she never took lightly. A direct and fearless Wiradjuri woman, Linda is always clear about who she is and why she does this work. “I say this in the strongest possible terms: Governments come and go. Public opinion waves and wanes. We ain’t going nowhere. This is our country. We will never forgo the pursuit of our rights.” Linda Burney, 2018. As a friend to, and advocate for, Reconciliation Australia, and an “Aunty” in all the best ways to myself and countless others we owe a debt of thanks to Minister Burney and wish her all the very best for a well-earned break as she starts the next stage of her journey. https://lnkd.in/ga3d3TSg #Reconciliation #LindaBurney
