In this study, Thayabaran Kathiresan, Redenlab’s Director of Audio Engineering co-authored "Cortical-striatal brain network distinguishes deepfake from real speaker identity”, published in Communications Biology (Nature). This study reports that, while deepfakes can partly deceive human cognition, a distinct cortical-striatal brain network is capable of detecting the subtle differences between real and fake speaker identities. Deepfake voices reduce listening pleasure, regardless of sound quality, showing that humans can only be partially fooled by deepfakes. The neural mechanisms involved highlight our natural ability to detect fake information. However, as generative algorithms improve daily, this raises concerns about what the future might hold. Redenlab are proud to support discovery and refinement of digital speech endpoints in #Batten disease. Communication is so important, and needs to be measured in clinical trials.

Up to 50% of individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) face communication challenges because of dysarthria, a condition that affects the motor aspects of speech. In this study, people with multiple sclerosis and matched healthy controls underwent structural and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), clinical assessment of disease severity and cerebellar dysfunction and a battery of motor speech tasks. These findings indicate that axonal damage, particularly when measured using diffusion metrics, underpin dysarthria in multiple sclerosis. Last May 30 to June 1, the Huntington's Disease Society of America hosted their 39th Annual Convention held in Spokane, Washington. For this event, Redenlab has partnered with the CHDI Foundation, working together to accomplish data collection with patients and families to strengthen our understanding in how speech, cognition and other disease factors manifest in HD. As a result, they were able to test more than 300 participants altogether. Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) encompasses a range of progressive neurodegenerative conditions that impair speech production and comprehension, higher cognitive functions, behaviour, and motor skills. Considerable research has focused on conventional acoustic speech markers in FTD, as well as assessments of apathy and challenges in emotion recognition and expression. This study was conducted by Adam Vogel, Brian Tracey,Yishu Gong, Brian Harel, Arthur Simen, MD, PhD, Katerina Placek, Brian Subirana, Fjona Parllaku, and Amy Brodtmann.
