📢 This week marks Queensland Road Safety Week for 2024 with the theme of One Team, Queensland aimed at ensuring we are all driving to protect each other. Legal Practice Manager Daniel Hemmings, from our Robina office on the Gold Coast, spoke about the risks of driving tired or distracted. Did you know that being awake for about 17 hours has a similar effect on your body as having a blood alcohol content of 0.05. Daniel urged all motorists to make sure they can identify the signs of fatigue and take breaks to ensure they are alert behind the wheel and prioritising the safety of all road users and avoid distractions like mobile phones while driving. 📌 Read about more dangerous driving habits to kick here: https://lnkd.in/gGeRvtJs #qldroadsafetyweek #qldroadsafetyweek2024 #safedriving #drivesafe #oneteamqld #rightwrong

Kelly Tomlinson and Caitlin Wilson from our Class Actions team were privileged to meet with the Aboriginal Family Legal Services (AFLS) team in Geraldton, WA last week for some important outreach.
AFLS - Geraldton Our Geraldton Legal Team, in partnership with Shine Lawyers, hosted a free information session last week focusing on the First Nations Child Removal Class Action. This work is hugely important in promoting the need for intervention and justice against the discriminatory practices of forced child removals by the Department of Child Protection, the separation of aboriginal children from family and culture, and the ongoing damage this causes. It also recognises the family members who are unfairly denied care of their grandchildren and/or young relatives in favour of the Department’s contracted Out of Home Care system or general foster carers, often placing children away from their Country. This action is directly related to the needs of our local aboriginal community, care and protection, and at the core of what the AFLS Legal Team practices. The event, led by our Managing Solicitor Amy Bowlay and Family Advocate Marcia Phillips.

***Warning: Distressing content*** Several grieving Victorian families have opened up about what they allege were serious failings in the psychiatric care of their loved ones. The families are suing Frankston Hospital, in Melbourne's southeast, for failing to provide appropriate psychiatric care. Tragically, they claim two of their family members died by suicide as a result. The cases, dating back to March 2021 and January 2022, have prompted Shine Lawyers to investigate the standards of psychiatric care being provided at Frankston Hospital and other public hospitals in Victoria. Shine's Medical Law Practice Leader Daniel Opare spoke with The Age after the families bravely shared their stories. If you've lost a loved one because of potential failings in their psychiatric care at Frankston Hospital or other Victorian public hospitals and wish to learn more about your legal options, go here: https://lnkd.in/gViHArtk #mentalhealth #psychiatriccare #vichealth #victorianhealth #publichealth

🚨 This week marks Queensland Road Safety Week, a time to reflect on our driving behaviours. 🚘 Today we're covering the topic of speed, one of the major causes of fatalities and serious crashes on the state's roads every year. Statistics show that travelling just 5km/h above the speed limit in urban areas (and 10km/h above in rural areas) is enough to double the risk of a casualty crash. Concerningly, 50 per cent of Queensland drivers admit to speeding more than half the time they are travelling. Our North Queensland GM Garreth Turner spoke about the importance of abiding by the speed limit, especially on our rural and remote roads. 📌 For more tips of safe driving in rural areas, check out our blog here: https://lnkd.in/gDnJ5pgc #qldroadsafetyweek #qldroadsafetyweek2024 #safedriving #drivesafe #oneteamqld #rightwrong

🚨 Today marks the start of Queensland Road Safety Week for 2024. There are inherent risks when driving, but several actions are within our control that can help preserve and protect life in the event of a serious crash. One of these is the wearing of seatbelts and restraints. Our Gold Coast Personal Injury GM Emily Lucas says the wearing of seatbelts is a no-brainer that saves lives and the Queensland Government's statistics reinforce the messaging. Did you know you are nine times more likely to die in a crash if you're not wearing a seatbelt. We are committed to advocating for safer roads and driver behaviours and urge everyone to commit to this year's One Team, Queensland vision and drive to protect ourselves and others. 🚗 Read more about car seat and restraint rules at our blog here: https://lnkd.in/gX5QSEZa #oneteamqld #qldroadsafetyweek #qldroadsafetyweek2024 #drivesafe #safedriving #rightwrong

📣 Two of our Class Actions team members, Special Counsel Caitlin Wilson and Solicitor Kelly Tomlinson, were in WA this week as part of their First Nations Child Removal investigations. Caitlin and Kelly were lucky enough to meet with the National Suicide Prevention & Trauma Recovery Project team, including Director Megan Krakouer and her team including Simone and Maryanne, to discuss the vital work the organisation is doing, while holding an information session for the Perth community. Megan is a well-known activist and advocate throughout Western Australia and the rest of the nation, having been recognised for her commitment to social justice and law reform. ❤️ The volunteer-run not-for-profit works to support the most vulnerable in the community. "It was a real privilege to spend time with Megan and her team. The work they do is so critical to saving and improving the lives of First Nations people," Caitlin said. 📌 For more about Shine's investigation, go here: https://lnkd.in/g6qXCim5 #westernaustralia #community #support #notforprofit #volunteers #firstnations #rightwrong

Our valued client Melanie has delivered a glowing review to our Ipswich team, based in southeast Queensland, west of the Brisbane CBD. It was the first time Melanie had required a lawyer and she says she made the right choice with Solicitor Christine Eldridge, Paralegal Erica Smith and the Ipswich team. "They would always check up on me to see how I was going and let me know what was happening with everything," Melanie said. "They took me through the whole process and what to expect in the coming months of my claim. "If you haven't had a lawyer before or need a good experience with one I would 100 per cent recommend the Shine Lawyers Ipswich team." We are proud to advocate for our clients to help them protect what matters. #feedback #customerservice #review #testimonial #rightwrong

⭐ Today we recognised several of our high achievers, those who have best embodied the spirit of Shine over the past 12 months, at our Shine Awards presentation. It was an opportunity to reflect on the tremendous efforts of the past 12 months and reaffirm our commitment to advocating for our clients. Before we list all of our deserving winners, a special mention to our Managing Director & CEO Award winner for 2024, dust diseases expert Kathryn Townsend. Her efforts in achieving a landmark ruling for black lung sufferers, the first coal mining black lung case to go to verdict, were simply incredible. She worked relentlessly to put the case forward for our brave client and the result has paved the way for justice for many more families into the future. Well done Kathryn and all of our winners of today's awards. 🎉 Congratulations to: Jodie Lang - Always stand up for the little guy award Ashton Spaulding - Dare to be different award Melissa Roberson - Ahead of the pack award Sarah Thomson - Exceptional outcome award Michelle Kelly and the Talent Acquisition Team - Best all round support team award Tyron Foster and the Ipswich Personal Injury Team - Commercial acumen award Timothy Tawil - Inspirational leadership award Clinton Light - Best coach/mentor award Carla Melbourne - Community engagement award Brianna Woodall - Rising star legal award Alisha Ranikhetwalla - Rising star business services award Kirsten Nasser & Roxanne Richards - Tenacious spirit award

We can't believe it's been over a week already since we were on the fairways with our mates in Townsville in sunny North Queensland, raising money for a great cause. Our Brighter Lives (Townsville Hospital Foundation) Charity Golf Day raised an incredible $17,451 for the charity which works to provide much-needed medical equipment for the Townsville Hospital and Health Service.
