🤝 Meet the face behind the place 😊 It’s Local Government Week and the perfect time to showcase some of our dedicated people and the role they play in our community. 🙏 Bereavement Services Supervisor, Debbie McTiernan, answers 3 quick questions. ❓ What do I do? I’m part of an outdoor team of six. Dedicated to the supervision of cemetery maintenance. Together we ensure that the grounds and gardens are maintained. My responsibilities include everything from lawn and garden maintenance, ash and plaque placements to overseeing and completing cremations and assisting with burials. ❓ How does the community benefit from what you do? I am proud to be part of a caring team that provides essential end of life services to the community. When we meet people, it is usually on one of the worst days of their lives. I like to think we can take a load off them and take care of the smaller details for their loved ones. ❓ Tell us something people don’t know about Bereavment Services? Council manages all ceremetries in the Shoalhaven which includes 7 active and 13 historical cemeteries, stretching from Berry to Ulladulla.

🤝 Meet the face behind the place 😊 It's Local Government Week and the perfect time to showcase some of our dedicated people and the role they play in our community. 🤵 Food, Beverage & Events Attendant, Hayden Ferguson, answers 3 quick questions. ❓ What’s the best thing about your job? The role's versatility, from serving food at large events to welcoming and directing people when they arrive at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre. Not to mention, the great team of people I work with. ❓ How does the community benefit from what you do? We make sure that every interaction a community member has is enjoyable and memorable. Whether it's attending a show or meeting friends for a coffee, we create a place where people can come together. ❓ What's a standout event you've worked on this year? The 2024 NAIDOC Awards last weekend. It was great to witness over 400 community members come together to recognise changemakers of the Shoalhaven and Illawarra. Plus, having the chance to experience Dan Sultan's live performance was an unexpected treat!

🤝 Meet the face behind the place 😊 It's Local Government Week and the perfect time to showcase some of our dedicated people and the role they play in our community. 🥪 Environmental Health Officer, Elizabeth Csanitz, answers 3 quick questions. ❓ What do you do? My primary role involves inspecting any food business which cooks, processes, stores or handles food for sale to the public. In addition to how clean the kitchen is, I look for signs of pest activity, correct temperature control and the overall processing of each menu item. ❓ What's the best thing about your job? I really enjoy helping and educating foodie small businesses to become the best and safest kitchens they can be! ❓ Tell us a fun fact. Smell is not an indication that food is safe. There are two different types of bacteria - spoilage bacteria and food poisoning bacteria. Food poisoning bacteria in food doesn't alter the smell, taste or appearance of food. So, if you have food in the fridge that's been there for quite a while, play it safe and throw it out!

Earlier in the week we came together to honour Greg Watson, one of Australia’s longest-serving councillors, for his remarkable 50 years of dedicated service to the Shoalhaven community. The event was filled with heartfelt stories, laughter, and a deep sense of gratitude for Greg’s unwavering commitment and tireless efforts in local government. Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating this milestone and making it a memorable occasion.

🤝 Meet the face behind the place 😊 It’s Local Government Week and the perfect time to showcase some of our dedicated people and the role they play in our community. 🙋Customer Experience Officer, Margie Brown, answers 3 quick questions. ❓ What do you do? I’m part of Council’s friendly, supportive Customer Experience team that will help when customers call us. My day to day? It’s all about listening, supporting, and actioning customers enquiries and requests to ensure our customers’ needs are recognised and followed through. ❓ How does the community benefit from what you do? We are always ready to listen and help. We can answer a number of enquiries without customers needing to be transferred, whether it be ordering a new garbage bin, road concerns or discussing general rates or water enquiries, and if customers require further expert advice, we refer them to the best person within Council to talk to. ❓ Tell something people don’t know about customer service? People are often amazed at the sheer variety of issues we handle from the hundreds of calls we receive daily. That’s part of the reason why I love my role so much (along with the great team I work with of course).
