In support of World Suicide Prevention Day, we acknowledge the vital role sport plays in bringing people together. When people experience a mental health crisis, they often come to their sporting communities for support, whether the crisis or incident was sport related or not. Sport leaders, administrators and volunteers can find themselves being asked to provide mental health support and guidance to members which can often be outside their expertise. Supporting Mental Health and Wellbeing Issues is the right thing to do! Head to the True Sport Website to find free resources and information regarding mental health and wellbeing in sport. In an emergency contact 000 or reach out to [email protected] for tailored support on which resources suit your mental health and wellbeing needs. https://lnkd.in/gJyJJyJV

SportWest as the peak body for sport in WA aims to guide and support our members on delivering quality experiences in sport, now and into the future. One of these crucial foundations to safe, welcoming and inclusive sport is creating culturally aware and appropriate environments for all Western Australians, with a particular focus on our First Nations people. As the first step in SportWest embarking on our cultural journey of learning and growth, Thursday 5 September 2024 was a milestone date, with the announcement of our inaugural Cultural Navigation Lead in Sharon Wood-Kenney. Sharon comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience in supporting WA communities to navigate cultural understanding, and SportWest will benefit greatly from her steady and experienced hands guiding us forwards. We are also proud to launch the Cultural Navigation Advisory Group. This Advisory Group will create a direct link from the peak body to industry members, and ensure SportWest remains by the industry for the industry in driving sustainable change in cultural inclusion in WA sport. Last night, we had the pleasure of hosting a meaningful discussion on Building Gender Equality in Sport at the Gold Netball Centre. The event featured insightful contributions from our panellists Niamh O'Connor, Chris Sutherland, and Johan Nel (PhD).   During the discussion, it became clear that there is a critical need to create workplaces that are not only inclusive but also safe and welcoming for all. The panel emphasised that sports environments should actively prioritise family-friendly policies, ensuring that the needs of families are central to the culture.   Additionally, the conversation challenged organisations to rethink their recruitment strategies by considering candidates' "potential" in addition to their existing experience and qualifications, broadening the scope for identifying and nurturing female talent.   We were fortunate to have the support of several male allies who joined us for the evening, demonstrating their commitment to advancing gender equality in sport and reinforcing the importance of collaborative efforts in driving meaningful change.   The second masterclass of the Emerging Leaders Program was held earlier in the day and facilitated by Carol Fox. It was a day of learning, growth, and empowerment for our future women leaders in sport.   Thank you to the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) for their continued support of the Women of Sport Program. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to making these events successful.   #WomenOfSport #GenderEquality #Leadership #Inclusivity #EmergingLeaders

Earlier this week, participants in the Women of Sport Emerging Leaders program took part in an engaging and insightful workshop with career strategist Lois Keay-Smith.   Lois led a deep dive into self-reflection, encouraging participants to reflect on what they’ve achieved so far and explore key aspects of their careers, including their values, personalities, strengths, and passions.   The workshop also introduced participants to practical career mapping tools and resources to help them chart their future paths with clarity and intention. As part of the program, they are now well-prepared for their upcoming one-on-one career guidance sessions with Lois and their signature profiling assessments.   The SportWest Women of Sport Emerging Leaders program, proudly supported by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, is all about equipping the next generation of female leaders with the tools and insights they need to thrive. Last night, we hosted an inspiring and informative workshop on "Joining a Board" at The Boulevarde Centre. A huge thank you to all the incredible women who joined us to learn, share, and connect as they take the next steps toward leadership roles on boards. We were fortunate to have Suzanne Ardagh AM, a seasoned Director and governance professional, lead the session. Her insights and experience provided valuable guidance on positioning oneself, identifying a unique value proposition, and understanding the responsibilities of being an effective board member. Thank you to the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) for their support in delivering these types of events that empower women and foster leadership in the sports sector. Looking forward to seeing the impact of last night’s discussions as more women step into leadership roles across the board. #Womenofsport #Leadership #WomenOnBoards #Governance #SportLeadership

SportWest invites you to join us at our upcoming SportWest Connect Session on Environmental, Social and Governance in Sport, facilitated by the Australian Sports Technologies Network. Environmental, social and governance (ESG), refers to a set of quantifiable parameters that can be used to measure the impact of an organisation, event or other activity on its surroundings, stakeholders and society. Beyond a compliance check list, consumers want organisations to do more on ESG to drive for environmental and social gains, and to have strong governance. Join us for this dynamic presentation from Martin Schlegel, Executive Chair ASTN, where we delve into the current state of tech and its impact on sporting organisations, events and venues, and the many benefits stakeholders are experiencing.
