We were honoured to host the Minister for Economic Growth Tim Pallas for his announcement of the latest grant recipients of the mRNA Victoria Research Acceleration Fund. More than 15 Victorian research teams will share in $2.1 million to accelerate new mRNA-based treatments for HIV, inflammatory disease, and hard to treat cancers. SVI will receive $100,000 to develop new treatments for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease harnessing mRNA editing technology. This condition impacts over 5 million Australians and is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/gSH-5RGN

This week, we joined the Victorian Chapter of the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI) to present a compelling narrative to Victorian Parliament about the full costs of undertaking research and why it is more important than ever to increase funding for medical research institutes to be able to continue their life-changing projects. Thank you for the opportunity to speak at such an important event. Currently, if a Victorian medical research institute receives a $1 million dollar research grant, it needs to find an extra $480,000 to simply undertake this research and keep running. Increasing support for the full costs of research will save lives, deliver skilled jobs, and keep the Victorian economy strong.
What a celebration at Victorian Parliament House last night, marking the life-saving medical research of our Vic institutes, focusing on supporting the full costs of their vital research. Thank you to all our speakers & guests, in particular the Hon. Ben Carroll and Georgie Crozier MP and AAMRI Vic Chair Ricky Johnstone. We heard first-hand from Sarah-Jane, mother of two children living with type 1 diabetes, about the daily impact on her family, from Anna, diagnosed at 12, who is part of a world-first diabetes trial led by St Vincent's Institute of Medical Research, and from SVI's Dr Michelle So on the importance of the trial. We shared the inspiring story of little Levi who was able to be quickly diagnosed as a newborn with a rare form of genetic epilepsy and treated thanks to rapid genome sequencing technology by Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI). The future of Victorian medical research institutes depends on increasing support to fund the full costs of their life-saving work. In doing so, save lives, deliver skilled jobs and keep the Victorian economy strong.

Excited to share our latest research published in Nucleic Acids Research! 🧬🔬 https://lnkd.in/g_nSKMmT Our team has uncovered key insights into the mechanism of FANCM, a crucial DNA repair protein. We've identified how FANCM recognises branched DNA structures and the vital role of its Hel2i subdomain in this process. This work not only advances our understanding of DNA repair mechanisms but also sheds light on potential vulnerabilities in certain cancer cells. Our findings could pave the way for new therapeutic strategies, particularly for cancers utilising the Alternative Lengthening of Telomeres (ALT) mechanism.

Big congratulations to A/Prof. John Wentworth who received the Australian Diabetes Society Ranji and Amara Wikramanayake Clinical Diabetes Research Award. This award recognises significant contributions to diabetes research by a mid-career clinician. A/Prof Wentworth leads or co-leads various JDRF-funded projects including Type1Screen and the Australasian Type 1 Diabetes Immunotherapy Collaborative (ATIC), a key platform driving immunotherapy clinical trials for type 1 diabetes in Australia. I am very proud of Dr Gavin Tjin, senior post-doc in my lab St Vincent's Institute of Medical Research who was recently awarded St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne Senior Investigator Award at the campus-wide ACMD Research week. We are very excited about the work he presented, revealing significant roles for dysregulated endothelial cells in blood production and susceptibility to bone marrow failure.

🎉 Celebrating 45 years – the hunch that led to a wonder drug used worldwide Professor Jack Martin’s research began a discovery cascade that led to the identification of a revolutionary new protein and the development of a novel and effective drug therapy that is now used worldwide to treat osteoporosis, cancer and other diseases. SVI Deputy Director Professor Natalie Sims said the way that Jack interpreted his findings is a great example of SVI’s motto ‘Inspired by discovery, driven by purpose.’ “By careful study of how the cells in the body work, scientists can develop entirely new ways of thinking, which can go on to provide cures,” Natalie said.
