There's Wally! 🔴 ⚪ Last week staff from across the District ditched their scrubs, blazers and ties for some red and white stripes, dressing up as the famous ‘Where’s Wally’ character to bring joy to the children’s wards! This annual event is adopted by nurses, doctors, allied health professionals and other NSW Health staff across the state to brighten the day of young ones and their families in our facilities. About us
Welcome to the South Western Sydney Local Health District - one of the largest health districts in the state. The District's vision is to provide a healthcare service that is patient focused, equitable and responsive to the changing and developing needs of the communities in south western Sydney. SWS LHD covers seven Local Government Areas from Bankstown to Wingecarribee and has a population of approximately 820,000 people. The District is among the most rapidly growing populations in NSW and projected to grow to over more than a million people in the next decade. It is also a vibrant, culturally diverse region with almost a third of its population speaking a language other than English at home. The District covers both rural and suburban communities and manages six acute public hospitals: Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital Bowral and District Hospital Campbelltown and Camden Hospitals Fairfield Hospital Liverpool Hospital The District also operates 14 major community health centres providing prevention, early intervention and community-based treatment, palliative care and rehabilitation services. Oral Health, Drug Health and Mental Health services are provided at a number of facilities across the District. Affiliated Health Services include: Karitane, Braeside Hospital, Carrington Centennial Care and the NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors.

Health Infrastructure has been delivering for Greater Western Sydney on behalf of NSW Health, and alongside our Local Health District partners, for more than 16 years. Today, Acting Chief Executive Emma Skulander presented at the Greater Western Sydney Future Health Forum, along with more than 270 healthcare professionals, industry pioneers, policymakers and stakeholders to discuss current and future health opportunities for the region. “Greater Western Sydney is home to some of the largest projects Health Infrastructure is delivering for communities now and into the future with growth that has seen 740,000 new residents added to the region’s population since 2006,” Ms Skulander said. “Health Infrastructure is supporting the NSW government's more than $6 billion investment in Western Sydney which is expected to generate more than 10,000 jobs for the local community.” Each project is unique to the community that it serves, and Health Infrastructure is proud to be delivering modern health facilities that are places of community and delivering care closer to home where it is needed most. Help and Heat Rank High at Health Forum 🏥 The Dialogue’s 3rd GWS Future Health Forum saw the unveiling of a policy to tackle Greater Western Sydney’s silent killer, and the announcement of new patient concierge officers for local hospitals in the West. NSW Health Minister Ryan Park addressed the Forum which brought together more than 250 delegates and leading representatives of the Local Health Districts and Primary Health Networks. To address the growing pressures on Western Sydney’s local hospitals, Minister Park told the forum at the Western Sydney Conference Centre that the new ‘dedicated patient flow concierge officers’ would support local medical staff. “With a growing region comes significant demand on our health network. Today we can announce that we will roll out 86 dedicated patient flow concierge officers, and 18 of them will be deployed in Western Sydney,” Mr Park said. At the forum CEO Adam Leto released the Dialogue’s Heat & Health in Greater Western Sydney Discussion Paper. Mr Leto said rising temperatures and cost of living pressures were having an alarming impact on the region and its residents. "Today’s health forum was held in Penrith which, in 2020, was the hottest place on the planet at 48.9 degrees. In the middle of summer, the daily maximum temperature is 31.2 degrees, compared to 27 degrees in the city. The Forum included important insights on the health, infrastructure and service challenges in Sydney’s fastest-growing region as well as strategies to tackle obesity, state and federal health reform and commercialising the innovation that exists in the GWS health space. Dialogue Chairman, Christopher Brown AM, recognised the important work and distinguished career of Sam Haddad, retiring Chair of the South Western Sydney LHD presenting him with the Chairman’s Prize for Public Sector Leadership. “This award recognises not just five years chairing the South Western Sydney LHD, but honours a distinguished career of advocacy for the greater west,” Mr Brown said. A SECOND CHANCE: Less than two months ago, Steven had just made a coffee for his son, Liam, when his life took a very sudden and unexpected turn. Walking into to discover his father unconscious in his chair, Liam called Triple Zero (000) which alerted GoodSAM volunteer Dr Rhys who rushed to his neighbour’s home and immediately started performing life-saving CPR, while also instructing Liam to grab a defibrillator from the nearby primary school. Dr Rhys provided Steve with the life-saving compressions and shocks he needed before paramedics arrived, who took over care. Now with a clean bill of health, the 66-year-old is eternally grateful for his second chance at life. “If it wasn’t for my son, Rhys and the paramedics, I wouldn’t be here today,” he said. The NSW public access defibrillator registry is now part of the GoodSAM app, which can connect responders, such as Dr Rhys, to nearby defibrillators in the case of a cardiac arrest. “You don’t have to be an expert to use a defibrillator, anyone can do it,” Rhys said. "Voice prompts guide you through exactly what you need to do.” Every minute counts. The Emergency Care Assessment and Treatment (ECAT) program is already improving patient and staff experience, says Kathryn Spears, who has been involved in both the statewide development and implementation in South Western Sydney Local Health District. "ECAT is providing whole-of-system reform for EDs. It has been led by emergency nurses, with a focus on developing and enhancing their capability to support the patient’s journey. I don’t know of a project that has achieved the same breadth of consultation and engagement, from colleges, supporting service providers and associated clinical experts." SWSLHD is delighted to announce an innovative partnership with Western Sydney University, NBMLHD, and WSLHD to launch the Undergraduate Assistant in Nursing (UAIN) Program! This fantastic initiative is designed to boost the confidence and competence of our future nursing professionals while they continue their studies and clinical placements as 2nd or 3rd year Bachelor of Nursing students. We are pleased to welcome 20 new UAINs who will be stationed at Fairfield, Bankstown, Campbelltown, and Camden Hospitals. These dedicated individuals are on a journey to enhance their professional clinical skills, seamlessly integrate into the workplace, think critically, and ensure exceptional patient outcomes. Additionally, this program aims to improve retention in nursing by nurturing independent, competent registered nurses ready to deliver quality care upon graduating. The UAIN Program is all about growth and development. Each UAIN will be assigned to a ‘home ward,’ where they will expand their Scope of Practice in alignment with their university curriculum. New artwork is adorning the walls of Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital thanks to a former student of the hospital’s school. Terrence Tran spent two months in hospital receiving treatment in 2023, attending Bankstown Hospital School to keep up with his year nine studies. While there Terrence sketched a series of images of the paediatric ward from his perspective which he titled 'My Hospital View". "I had teachers support me with my schoolwork and school activities. Aside from academics, I also engaged in a wellbeing and mindfulness session with the teachers which was nice. I enjoyed my time sketching and drawing many things, reading books provided and doing some robotics with another patient/student,” Terrence said. The unveiling of Terrence’s artwork coincides with NSW Public Education week with the theme 'proud to belong'. Terrence's artwork highlights how a student can feel a sense of belonging no matter the setting they are engaging in learning. Thank you, Terrence, for the wonderful artwork!
