Australians are following the lead of chocolate and chip manufacturers, using shrinkflation to deal with the spiralling cost of building a new home. Instead of super-sized ovens or high-end mixer taps, people are building slightly smaller kitchens and bathrooms and installing cheaper whitegoods or more affordable fittings. And, after one of the longest run-up in construction costs in decades, there are now signs builders are finally cutting their overall prices, with discounts of up to $20,000 on new homes in Sydney to get prospective buyers into a new property. "If we ever needed a reminder of the weird world that is Sydney schooling, it was the spectacle of parents hacking the NSW Department of Education’s website in a desperate bid to discover whether their prized offspring had secured a prized position in a prized selective school," writes state political editor Alexandra Smith. Selective schooling is a quirk of education in NSW. In the mid-1980s, there were seven selective schools in the state. Since then, about 40 more have opened. No other state has nearly as many. More than half a million Australians bought a home in 2021 during the COVID property boom, but there has been less growth in the value of those homes than for people who waited a year, new analysis reveals. CoreLogic head of Australian research Eliza Owen said a perfect storm of market influences whipped buyers into a “frenzy”. “Many Australians were incentivised to buy in 2021 because interest rates were low and values were rising quickly … and the HomeBuilder incentive was also in play for the first four months of the year. "Coles is a very large company, so quoting $1.1 billion in net profit as proof of price gouging is ludicrous," writes Elizabeth Knight. Foiling thieves contributed $80 million to #Coles earnings in the second half of the financial year. In the same period last year, Coles lost twice that amount to theft. Successfully reducing its costs was also an important element in the mix that helped the supermarket division report a pre-tax profit improvement of about 10 per cent. New international student enrolments will be capped at 270,000 next year in federal government reforms, with large metropolitan universities with a high concentration of foreign students and private colleges to be most affected. Education Minister Jason Clare said the overall number of new international students next year would be roughly the same as in 2023, but students would be more evenly spread across the cities and regions, as he rejected claims the caps would destroy Australia’s higher education sector.
