About us

The Leading Lab – a leadership consulting company that formulates research-based strategies to develop great leaders and capture valuable insights to help your company thrive at all levels. From training programs to independent program evaluation and reporting, The Leading Lab can help you create an end-to-end strategy that’s tailored to your unique leadership challenges. We get it – leaders and executive teams are busy. While leadership development is seen as an important company investment, the unfortunate reality is that development programs are often hastily planned, executed, and wrapped up within the mad rush of business-as-usual activities. The result? Spending on these programs can end up even costlier than not doing so, due to a poorer learning experience and little to no measurable outcomes to report on. The good news is, The Leading Lab is here to help you every step of the way and ensure your investment reaps both short and long-term rewards with WISSE* - our proven end-to-end process for optimising organisational leadership development: Why – We consult with you to discuss your organisational aims, desired results, and create a broader strategy for leadership development. Intervention - We co-create a program that’s targeted to your objectives and requirements. Selection – We assess your people’s current ability, strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for development. Systems – We help you build systems to ensure your leadership development initiatives remain sustainable in the long term. Evaluation – We measure the effectiveness of the program using established evaluation models. Keen to know more? Reach out!

How do we train leaders to be more supportive? And should we? A new study published in Management Science found that supportive leadership training is positively related to employee engagement and satisfaction. Here is what you should know (and why): * This study is a (still) rare example of RCT (randomised controlled trial) in evaluating the effect of leadership training. This means there was a carefully selected and matched control and intervention group. Moreover, this study was conducted in a real organisation with real managers and their employees. * A short, 20-minute training in supportive leadership immediately and positively impacted employee engagement and satisfaction in a meeting (compared to a control group). * Authors further unpacked which component of the training was most impactful, and it was getting leaders to identify concrete ways to encourage team members and acknowledge their contribution. This study made me think about the importance of short and context-relevant leadership training (on-demand) instead of longer-term (cram in as much as possible) approaches. It is fantastic to see high-quality experimental design in collaboration with an organisation. And the level of detail, pinpointing a specific training component that has the largest effect. It would be interesting to see if the effects of training persist over the longer term and are applicable in other contexts (outside of team meetings). What do you think about a 20-minute snap training for leaders? Let me know in the comments. #leadership #leadershipdevelopment #research The Leading Lab

Why Leadership Development Matters? In today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, effective leadership is more crucial than ever. It’s not just about managing tasks and teams; it’s about inspiring, motivating, and driving meaningful change within the organisation. However, many leaders today are under-developed and unprepared for future challenges. This gap can lead to significant issues, including a weaker workplace culture, decreased employee wellbeing, and higher turnover rates. So, why exactly does leadership development matter? Here are some key reasons: 1. Enhances Workplace Culture: Leaders set the tone for the organisation. Effective leadership fosters a positive workplace culture, encouraging collaboration, innovation, and mutual respect among employees. 2. Improves Employee Wellbeing and Engagement: Leaders who are well-equipped to understand and address their team's needs can significantly improve employee morale and engagement. This leads to higher job satisfaction and productivity. 3. Boosts Retention Rates: Strong leadership is a critical factor in employee retention. Despite significant investments in leadership development, a staggering 77% of companies report a leadership gap. This means that most organisations feel their current leadership is not equipped to meet future challenges. Are you one of them? At The Leading Lab, we understand that effective leadership is the cornerstone of a thriving organisation. Yet, many companies struggle to develop leaders who can inspire, motivate, and drive success. This gap in leadership can lead to a weaker workplace culture, decreased employee wellbeing, and higher turnover rates as top talent seeks opportunities elsewhere. So, what’s causing this leadership gap? 1. Lack of Targeted Development Programs: Many leadership programs are hastily planned and executed, leading to poor learning experiences and minimal measurable outcomes. 2. Under-Developed Leaders: Today's leaders often lack the necessary skills and preparation to face future challenges, leaving them under-developed and unprepared. 3. Inadequate Evaluation and Feedback: Without proper evaluation and feedback mechanisms, it’s difficult to measure the effectiveness of leadership programs and make necessary adjustments. The good news is, The Leading Lab is here to help bridge this gap. Dr Darja Kragt specialises in creating research-based strategies tailored to your unique leadership challenges. Our comprehensive approach ensures your investment in leadership development reaps both short and long-term rewards. Together, we can create a leadership development strategy that ensures your leaders are prepared for the challenges of tomorrow.
