A new GRDC investment will boost knowledge and understanding of rhizobia strains that are critical to the success of chickpea and mungbean rotations in cropping systems 🌱. Legumes fix an estimated 3.5 million tonnes of nitrogen in Australian ag each year, equivalent to an annual fertiliser cost of $3.5 billion. This new investment will focus on identifying strains with potential as superior inoculants for Group N (chickpea) and Group I (mungbean). The GRDC-supported International Legume Inoculant Genebank (ILIG) at Murdoch University, led by Dr Jason Terpolilli, will spearhead efforts to characterise rhizobia strains in their collection. 🎙️ NEW PODCAST Instances of spot form net blotch in barley crops across the low rainfall zones of WA have been increasing in recent years, mainly due to the increased area of barley on barley, and the use of more susceptible varieties in these areas. A GRDC investment with the Department of Primary Industries & Regional Development is aiming to quantify the yield impact of spot form net blotch in these low rainfall environments, as well as provide growers critical info on the disease's response to fungicide applications and if one is even needed at all. In this episode, we sat down with DPIRD's Geoff Thomas to discuss what they're looking into in terms of stubble and disease carry over, economic analysis, and the impact of variety resistance. Last week the GRDC Southern Panel toured Victoria visiting growers and industry representatives to discuss issues and share ideas and knowledge. It was an awesome opportunity to connect with growers and we are super grateful to everyone who met, hosted and talked to us. We met with people from Rural Bank, ORM Pty Ltd, Agriculture Victoria, Irrigation Farmers Network, Riverine Plains Inc, Field Applied Research (FAR) Australia Ltd, Nutrien Ag Solutions - Australia, ADAMA Australia, AgBiz Assist and Dookie Campus of the University of Melbourne plus visited grower groups and grower properties, where we were warmly welcomed and participated in some insightful and engaging conversations. Visits to both Uncle Toby’s Oats and JBS-Rivalea feedmill were also stand-outs, giving the panel new insights into other aspects of the grains industry. We are hugely grateful to everyone who joined the tour and spoke to the panel, we appreciate the time and effort others contributed to the tour’s success. 👉 Meet the GRDC Southern Panel: https://bit.ly/3UHblpp

Harvester workshops are set to hit South Australia and Victoria later this month to bring together harvester specialists, industry experts and researchers to give grain growers the latest advice ahead of this season’s harvest. Our Harvester Set-up Workshops will be hosted by AIR EP - Ag Innovation & Research Eyre Peninsula in South Australia and the Birchip Cropping Group (BCG) in Victoria in collaboration with local growers: ⭐ 18 September, Kimba, SA https://bit.ly/47dXjC3 ⭐ 19 September, Wudinna, SA https://bit.ly/47aQwcl ⭐ 20 September, Cummins, SA https://bit.ly/4cNmsVr ⭐ 24 September, Catumnal, Victoria https://bit.ly/47cFfsb ⭐ 26 September, Stewarton, Victoria https://bit.ly/4cSTvHL GRDC Southern Panel chair and Rutherglen grain grower Andrew Russell has attended past harvester set-up workshops. He said they are an “awesome resource” and one of the best parts of attending is listening to the conversations between growers, skilled header operators and other machinery experts. Grain losses at harvest cost producers millions of dollars each season. Of these losses, up to half could be recovered with adjustments to harvester settings, machinery sensor calibrations and equipment modifications. The workshops provide a grower-friendly forum for capturing knowledge to reduce risks at harvest and maximise efficiency. 👉 Read more https://bit.ly/3AOQ0Vq

GRDC and the Department of Primary Industries & Regional Development have released additional details on the $56M Soil Water and Nutrition (SWAN) collaboration announced last month. The 5-year collaboration aims to lift water and nutrient use efficiency in WA grain production to achieve water use efficiency gains of more than 10%. DPIRD principal research scientist and SWAN collaboration manager Dr Stephen Davies said the initiative will have 3 strategic programs: 🚧 expanding soil reengineering and water management, led by Dr Gaus Azam 🌱 integrated nutrient management systems to sustainably supply crop nutrients longer-term, led by Dr Craig Scanlan 👨🌾 readiness for industry adoption, led by Wayne Parker Kalannie grower Bob Nixon has been involved in soils research in WA for several years and said WA growers were now benefiting from widespread amelioration practices like liming, deep ripping and spading, but there is significant potential for further gains for WA grain production under the SWAN collaboration.
