We design solutions that help people and the planet thrive.

About us

ThinkPlace is a strategic design consultancy with a global network operating across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Kenya, Senegal and U.S.A. For 15+ years, we have been tackling some of the world’s most complex challenges using design-led, human-centred approaches. We design with change leaders from the public, private and the non-profit sector and engage with the complexity and the messiness of real human experiences — how people live, work and play; how people experience products, services, regulations; how they navigate systems they interact with — health, education, energy, economic, regulatory, social welfare, to name a few. Globally we are a team of over 150 people who are passionate about making the world a better place. ThinkPlace has adopted the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as our guiding purpose. Every project we take on, all over the world, must ‘move the needle’ on these goals.

Australia’s aged care sector has been failing our elderly. The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission (ACQSC) is striving to change that. In 2021, the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety published findings that amplified the need for urgent action. The Commission described the sector as “woefully inadequate” and stated “many people receiving aged care services have their basic human rights denied”. It also highlighted that the sector was experiencing overburdensome regulation, yet this was ineffectively addressing risk. The recommendations provided by the Royal Commission prompted a once-in-a-generation regulatory reform, including the Aged Care Act and ACQSC (our national regulator) strengthening the capacity and capabilities of their Quality Assessors. The ACQSC engaged ThinkPlace and our partners at The Ed Institute to design an innovative learning environment to better support Quality Assessors and their job-readiness. The result is an enduring Learning & Development journey that creates a better-equipped workforce. Many teens finish school thinking there are two next steps – trade school or university. But what if we were to introduce them to a third? What if we could nurture future leaders with the skills to become innovative entrepreneurs? “What if” is a phrase we use frequently at ThinkPlaceX, and widening our lens usually pays off. In this project, we worked with the Bulimba Community Centre to design an immersive bootcamp for teenagers in the Brisbane area. The four-day program, called the Young Entrepreneurs Bootcamp, inspired future leaders to consider a career path that aligns with their untapped talents. We’ll be touching base with the cohort and sharing their ideas from the bootcamp in the coming weeks. Watch this space. Michael Bye

In this article in The Mandarin, the senior leadership of ThinkPlaceX in Australia – John Body, Sally Dorsett, Nina Terrey and Darren Menachemson GAICD – refute the notion that government is slow. In it, they argue that public servants face stratospheric demands in this highly complex world, and it’s up to us as designers, sensemakers and strategists to enable them to activate their enormous potential.    Why? Because when governments prioritise innovation, co-design and pace, they can have a meaningful impact. When they engage focused and effective external experts, they strengthen their ability to deliver results, rapidly. Gone are the days of plastering the next buzzword across reports that will be disseminated and then forgotten. To create better futures, governments must do away with tick-box stakeholders that simply replicate capacity and redistribute budgets offshore. Collaborative action between public and private sectors has the potential to drive significant societal advancements. Here, our team explains how this is possible: https://lnkd.in/gr7qYdmG

The team at Wannon Water, a water services provider in South West Victoria, Australia, has won the 2024 Circular Project award at the ENVIRO Awards for their outstanding circularity efforts.   We partnered with Wannon Water – in collaboration with Tonkin + Taylor – to help them on their mission to become a regional leader in circularity by 2025.    The Circular Economy Roadmap and educational visual tool we co-designed gave Wannon Water a strong framework to achieve their sustainable business goals.    To read more about Wannon Water’s journey to circularity, and the design that’s supporting their goals, head here: https://lnkd.in/g-WAXnrn

A circular business model is a powerful sustainability solution, so Wannon Water in South West Victoria has set its sights on transitioning.   The water provider services 100,000 residents and 4,000 businesses, so needed a seamless, easily digestible circular economy model that would improve understanding, inspire staff and generate change.   We'd previously worked with Wannon Water on phase one of their circularity journey, co-designing a roadmap to their circularity vision. Building on this project, we helped Wannon Water create a visual tool that shows how a circular ecosystem works. This tool serves to educate their staff whilst providing a blueprint for successful circularity for other businesses in the region.   To learn more about our project with Wannon Water, head here: https://lnkd.in/gS2_BUjX

Wannon Water hopes to be a circularity leader in South West Victoria by 2025. It’s an ambitious goal, but with a robust strategy, they know it can be done. ThinkPlace Australia were engaged by the water and sewerage service provider to help with their purposeful transition to circularity. Through rigorous research, meaningful co-design and innovative ideation, we co-created a circular economy roadmap, providing tangible goals and actions to leave the linear economy behind. Gruen is an Australian panel show that gives insight into the advertising, marketing and PR industries. For the past seven years, ThinkPlaceX in Australia has competed in ‘The Pitch’—a segment where experts are challenged to sell the unsellable.    While we’ve faced a completely different challenge every year, our approach remains the same; our differentiator is that our creative approach always begins with strategy, human experience, and human insight. Once the groundwork is done, the creative brainstorming begins.      The 2024 Gruen season has had us reflecting on our The Pitch entries over the past seven years. Here, we’re revisiting our entries, and diving into the strategic creativity that made them.     Take a look: https://lnkd.in/gCBbjUap

Seven things you might not know about us... 🌏 We’re on a mission to design more equitable outcomes for all people and places. 🇳🇿 We work right across Aotearoa New Zealand, from our two design studios in Pōneke Wellington and Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. 🚦We work with courageous change-makers across the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. We get excited when these sectors combine skills and resources to address the big challenges. 🎂 This year we will be celebrating 15 years since Jim Scully had the crazy idea to start an agency with a difference: high impact, high integrity, high value. 🧠 We are known for our experience-centred and systems-level thinking (and doing) that creates change you can see and feel. 💫 The average tenure of our team is 5.8 years. 🧶🌱🏔️⚖️🏃🏻 Outside of work, you might find us crocheting, growing native seedlings, scaling mountains, campaigning for justice, or chasing kids around a sports field!

“The heart of human-centred design is about centring users and key actors in any kind of complex system so that we genuinely listen and understand what their needs are.” – Dr. Nina Terrey We love this excerpt from the latest Work with Purpose APS podcast, produced by IPAA ACT and contentgroup 👏🏽 ThinkPlace Australia’s Partner and Chief Sustainability and Equity Officer, Dr. Nina Terrey, joined Rebecca Bodel from the Australian Taxation Office, and Professor Brenton Prosser from UNSW Canberra, speaking to host David Pembroke about human-centred design. In the episode, ‘A masterclass in human-centred design in the public sector’, the three experts discuss how empathy, creativity and strategic thinking positively influence policy and service delivery for Australian communities.  Listen to the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/gRtG5i5s
