We are incredibly proud to have signed a cooperation agreement with WWF Indonesia yesterday, to work together towards making ASC certified seaweed farms in Indonesia a reality as part of Seafood Savers WWF Indonesia 🌊 Lots of hard work ahead but it’s a symbol of strong intentions and the culmination of detailed planning & engagement between WWF, our Indonesian joint venture SeaSae, and farming coop partner Agar Makmur Sentosa. Special thanks to Bhima Aries Diyanto, Imam Musthofa Zainudin, Nur Ahyani, Tiara Fitri Erinanda. More to come!
About us
Uluu is an exciting new biomaterial that's incredible for our oceans and climate. It fights global warming by sequestering carbon in anything, and everything, that's built with it. It's biodegradable - so it won't harm our environment or the creatures living in it. And, it's made from seaweed - an amazing, renewable resource, which cleans up our oceans, promotes marine biodiversity, yet doesn’t displace precious farmland. Uluu - reviving the world.

Science in the House! 👩🔬 Last week we were delighted to connect with the next generation of STEM leaders at the Government Scientists Group STEM Expo at Parliament House. Students and early career researchers got to learn about the diverse range of research and career opportunities we have available with interactive displays. This included: 🥽 Augmented reality experiences showing how we’re tackling climate change and decarbonisation. 🐜 Using AI to identify harmful pests like the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug with our innovative app. ♻️ Samples of Uluu’s innovative seaweed-derived polymer, a sustainable alternative to plastic. 👂 Our 3D-printed silicone ear that’s paving the way for personalised medical devices. ☣️ A PC4 biohazard suit used by experts at our high-containment research facility in Geelong. Our early research career postdoc, Melanie McGrath, also shared her insights into responsible and trusted AI, demonstrating the real-world impact of STEM careers. Catch Melanie’s presentation and other inspiring talks on the livestream replay: https://lnkd.in/gQy38wgw

Thanks to everyone who attended last night’s event, Global Game Changers - The Big Carbon Rethink. Your enthusiasm and engagement were evident in the insightful questions and vibrant discussions that continued long after the panel concluded. We aimed to provide a multifaceted perspective on re-imagining carbon to solve our climate crisis. Our diverse panel included representatives from corporates, an industry association, an SME, a startup, and academia, all contributing unique insights into this pressing issue. We explored how to shift our manufacturing systems to replace fossil carbon with bio-based alternatives. From innovative #algae-based products to tools for monitoring carbon footprints, and we highlighted the importance of understanding the “end of life” of bio-products. The audience appreciated the immense opportunities but also the urgency with which we need to act. A video recording of the event will be available next week. Dismayed by the ever-expanding plastic pollution clogging up our oceans and killing our sea life, oceanographer and Uluu co-founder Julia Reisser has formulated a climate-positive way to replace plastic altogether (and it shares some similarities with beer). 🚨 PHA vs. PLA 🚨 -While PLA is a bio-based, it is hardly considered biodegradable since it must be composted in industrial facilities to ensure full mineralization. -Some composters argue that PLA does not fully compost even in industrial conditions therefore many facilities do not accept PLA. -PHA holds an advantage as it is more inherently biodegradable because it does not require expensive infrastructure for effective waste management. Home composting could be a viable route for smaller communities that do not have the capital/infrastructure to support industrial facilities. -PHA's enhanced biodegradability acts as an environmental safety net. If a PHA product is not correctly composted, then it has the ability to fully mineralize in closed/open landfills, soil, freshwater, and even the ocean*. PLA does not have this characteristic. *depends on part thickness, morphology, composition (biopolymer blend), temperature, and abiotic factors such as sunlight. #biodegradable #homecomposting #homecompost #compost #plastic #plasticpollution #microplastics Tim Steckel
