Amid the cost-of-living crisis, university students are increasingly choosing degrees based on future job prospects, according to a new survey. The Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) annual lifestyle report found 64% students chose a course based on employability — up 7% from the previous year, The Sydney Morning Herald reports. Passion was still a key driver for 80% of students, but this was down 3%. The UAC study found while students were more concerned about high living expenses, mental health pressures had decreased. "We're seeing students making careful economic decisions around employment outcomes after they finish their study," spokeswoman Kim Paino said. "But they're also showing great resilience." In a post on LinkedIn, Cathy Sherry, a professor from Macquarie University, wrote that we need to stop telling young people to choose a degree based on their passion. "A tiny proportion of people are lucky enough to earn money doing something they're passionate about," she said. "For the rest of us, we're fortunate if we earn money doing something that interests us. We set young people up to have such skewed expectations of work telling them to follow their 'passion'." 📢 We surveyed nearly 17,000 Year 12 students! 💡 The Sydney Morning Herald reports, "The University Admissions Centre annual lifestyle report found that this year’s cohort of first-year students is more pragmatic than those from previous years. The students were likely to pick degrees based on employability as cost of living pressures bite. Of the more than 17,000 school leavers surveyed, cost as an influence on their choice of institution rose almost 10 percentage points this year, from 34 per cent to 43 per cent. Students who chose a course based on employability outcomes rose seven percentage points to 64 per cent while work experience and internship opportunities as a factor in degree choice increased by seven percentage points to 46 per cent. UAC recently welcomed students and staff from USYD's Industry and Community Project unit. 🌟 This partnership allows students to work with industry leaders to tackle real-world challenges. This semester, students reimagined university admissions to broaden access to higher education. 🌟 After a semester of hard work, eight student groups presented solutions such as: ➡️ Engaging students from early high school ➡️ Supporting disadvantaged groups in aspiring to higher education ➡️ Creating tools like gamified learning modules and guides This was the sixth collaboration with Sydney University, with mentorship from Adam Hennessy, Helen Tam, and Mitch Smith. We look forward to working with new students in semester two!

Stepping away from the desk and into higher ed sector gatherings with ATEM Inc! ✔ UAC's Nerida Bewick took part in a panel that focused on how each tertiary admission centre in Australia is improving access and widening participation. 💡 From a UAC perspective, Nerida explained changes made to UAC’s Educational Access Scheme and Schools Recommendation Scheme to better support schools and applicants, and introduced a suite of tools designed to help students research and plan!
