About us

Wollongong is Australia's ninth largest city, with a population of over 200,000. Located 80 kilometres south of Sydney, Wollongong covers 714 square kilometres and occupies a narrow coastal strip bordered by the Royal National Park to the north, Lake Illawarra to the south, the Tasman Sea to the east and the Illawarra escarpment to the west. Our Strategic Direction and Priorities Council has a range of priorities that it must consider in its planning and allocation of resources. How we manage and address these will be guided by the Community Strategic Plan. Governance We have built an ethical and robust governance framework. Our current focus is on our policies, procedures and practices relating to tendering, contracting and the purchase of goods and services. Customer Service Council’s e-business strategy will increase online access to our services and identify potential efficiency gains for our customers and staff. Value for Money We are committed to the provision of cost effective services that provide the community with good value for money. This requires active financial management now and into the future. We are reviewing our services to understand and improve how we must deliver them. Infrastructure and Service Planning We own and manage a wide variety of assets on behalf of the community. Assets like roads, parks, stormwater, drainage, libraries and community facilities underpin the success of the city as a place for people to live, work and play. Climate Change The potential impacts of climate change and sea level rise require us to plan for and manage our existing coastal communities, consider the impacts of flooding on new development, and propose mitigation and adaption measures for anticipated risk. Wollongong City Council’s social media channels aims to inform, educate, and inspire our community. Join us for an insightful gathering where local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses unite with government and non-government stakeholders. This is the first time Council has held a panel event that specifically focusses on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander business and procurement. We're pleased to work with the Illawarra Indigenous Business Network, Illawarra Aboriginal Corporation, BlueScope and the Department of Primary Industries & Regional Development to make this happen. Thank you to Tina McGhie from Illawarra Indigenous Business Network who will be hosting the panel. This is a free event, but don't forget to book your tickets via: https://lnkd.in/gB6XNEQx #Indigenousbusiness #Indigenousaustralia #equalopportunities #illawarra

Thanks for sharing, Mark Grimson! As Economic Development Manager, it’s Mark’s (and team) job to investigate future business and investment opportunities for Wollongong. Right now, the team are calling for local business owners in the Wollongong LGA to participate in the 2024 Wollongong Business Survey. This survey builds on previous research and paints a picture of the current business operations within Wollongong. The data collected will inform the review of Council’s Economic Development Strategy 2019-2029 which has approached its 5-year mid-point. If you’re a business owner based in Wollongong (large or small) please complete the survey before Monday 16 September 2024. It should take approximately 10 minutes to complete, and a summary of the data will be shared with the public. To submit a response, see: https://lnkd.in/dEUnTZqN

Economic Development - Building a better Wollongong

On behalf of Wollongong Council's Economic Development team, I am pleased to announce the 2024 Wollongong Business Survey is now live, providing local businesses the opportunity to have input into Council's future plans.   Building on previous iterations, the survey is designed to help Wollongong City Council gauge current local business sentiment and ensure we better understand the evolving challenges in these difficult economic times.   The survey will also provide fresh data on current and future priorities and will inform Council's forthcoming review of the Economic Development Strategy, which is approaching its 5-year mid-point.   If you are a business owner in the Wollongong LGA, I encourage you to complete the survey before it closes on 16th September: https://lnkd.in/gApRmqym Gordon Bradbery Greg Doyle Linda Davis Invest Wollongong #investwollongong #wollongong

Good news, #Helensburgh! The location for the future Helensburgh Community Centre & Library has been revealed as 53-55 Walker Street. It’s located next to the existing library location. The new library will be like the well-loved combined community and library facilities in #Thirroul and #Corrimal. Our aim is to provide flexible spaces that meet our community’s needs. That means whether you want to borrow a book, use a computer, socialise, or hire a room for a meeting, dance class or birthday party, we’ll have you covered. Now that a location is secured, we’ll work on a comprehensive planning and design process and we’re working towards an ambitious construction start date of autumn 2027. Part of this process includes checking back in with the community soon to make sure that what we've been told previously by the community still meets their needs. Thanks Careers at Council for sharing this Q&A with Clare Robinson. As Wollongong City Council’s Emergency Management Officer, Clare works with combat agencies like NSW Police Force, NSW State Emergency Service, NSW Rural Fire Service, and NSW Health to prepare for and respond to emergencies. Why does Council have this role? It’s because during an emergency Council teams will help the response team with day-to-day support. In non-emergency times, our role shifts to actioning prevention measures and educating the community on how they can be prepared. A good example of Council’s role in action during an emergency was during the April 2024 flash flooding event. Working with other combat agencies, Council staff were on the ground clearing flood waste, removing debris, repairing damaged infrastructure and clearing creeks. This Q&A is a fantastic read for those interested in what it takes to ensure a community is prepared for emergencies such as bushfires, flash floods, landslides, and storms. Good job Clare! https://lnkd.in/gThQwdmj

Project Director - Animal Care & Impounding Services at Wollongong City Council

Not your usual Saturday morning trip to Bunnings! 🔨🔨🔨 I was more then proud to attend the Stores for Paws event at Kembla Grange Bunnings and represent Wollongong Pet Connection (Wollongong City Council) with our Foster Care & Rehoming Officer, Emily Middleton. It was also a pleasure to share this space with like minded people who also have a passion for animal welfare, including Lost & Found Pets Illawarra and Animal Welfare League NSW. We also took four of our furry friends with us on the day who are currently looking for new homes 🏡 , resulting in a number of people registering their interest in adopting each of them! 🐶🐶🐶🐶 Thank you for the team at Kembla Grange Bunnings for inviting us, we can’t wait to do it again.

Like many organisations, encouraging people to engage with a project when there’s so many projects and businesses fighting for attention, is a constant challenge. Earlier in the year, we called for community feedback on two new skateparks located in Thirroul and Wollongong CBD. We received a whopping 800 responses from our community! It’s a testament to how much the Wollongong community values skateparks. It’s also thanks to the hard work of Council’s Engagement Team – Sophie McCrea & Emma Bedwin – who developed a comprehensive engagement plan. A big focus for the team was on making sure that a diversity of voices was captured in the feedback. While skatepark users swings towards young men and boys (69% of people who responded), when it comes to designing modern skateparks, we want everyone to feel welcome. We have a way to go before picking up the tools and starting construction. But we now have some clear themes thanks to this feedback that will form the basis of the final design. 🛹 Locate in high profile locations which are supported by inclusive amenities. 🛹 Design for people of all skill levels, from beginners to experts. 🛹 Shade, lighting, seating, and access to water are important. 🛹 Feeling safe in these spaces is important. You want these spaces to feel open and visible. 🛹 Not everyone plans on using a skateboard. Some people want to ride BMX bikes and scooters. Our next step is to continue to review potential locations for each skatepark. Once we have a design that’s 50% complete, we’ll check back in with the community to make sure we’re on the right track.
