  • Last week, the ACT Senator David Pocock and great supporter of the Centre, launched the national campaign to save community legal centres at Parliament House. Every year, the Centre assists more than 1,600 women and over 2,000 accompanying children in the ACT. Despite this the 2024 Federal Budget failed to provide the urgent funding boost and long-term funding security the community legal sector desperately needs. ACT funding is also uncertain and inadequate to meet the legal need in our community. With less than a year’s guaranteed funding left, the Centre community legal centres are in the most uncertain position we have faced in a decade. The Women’s Legal Centre supports the campaign and calls on the ACT & Federal Government to step up and provide fair funding to community legal centres. #SaveCommunityLegalCentres

Today we wrapped up the 2023 Audrey Fagan Board Traineeship Program, graduates received their certificates from Suzanne Orr, MLA for Yerrabi, and enjoyed a celebration afternoon tea with their mentors.   The Audrey Fagan Board Traineeship program aims to increase the representation of women and gender-diverse people on ACT boards and committees. The program connects women and gender-diverse people with a mentor and provides training in corporate governance, leadership, and decision-making. Participants attend board meetings and build the experience they need to join a board. The program improves women’s career prospects and helps grow their professional networks.   Did you know YWCA Canberra has facilitated this program for the ACT Government – ACT Office for Women since 2022.   The 2024 Audrey Fagan Board Mentor Program will kick off in July 2024, for more information about this opportunity, we've got a link in the comment section.

  • Erin Priestly, Head of the Sexual Violence Legal Service at the Centre spoke to the Canberra Times about the ways the rights of complainants can be better protected in criminal proceedings related to sexual violence. "We have observed judges to give significant leeway to the accused party to undertake cross-examination rather than to step in to ensure these protections are enforced..." Ms Priestly said the service supported the introduction of a specialised sexual assault court list, and its goals of reducing delays and achieving earlier resolutions. "A specialised list is just one step in building faith in the criminal justice system. It alone will not achieve this, however, and it is just one change amongst many that are needed," the lawyer said. "Such a list will only be successful where everyone involved - the judicial officers, the prosecutors, and defence solicitors - have adequate training on trauma responses to sexual violence and consider the design of processes to ameliorate these." https://lnkd.in/gQhX_D8n

  • This is what Women's Legal Services across Australia are looking for in tonight's Federal Budget. These investments are critical to ensuring women in the ACT can access the specialist legal assistance they need, when they need it. +3

Today's Federal Budget must include significant investment in Women's Legal Services to ensure women in crisis can access legal assistance. Without additional funding, we estimate services will be forced to turn away 52,000 women this year. We are calling for: 1. An additional $25 million under the National Legal Assistance Partnership for Women's Legal Services to assist women in crisis to escape and recover from violence. 2. Indexation funding that at a minimum equates to CPI increases and required increases to wages and superannuation. 3. Government funding for Women's Legal Services Australia as a national peak body to advocate for justice, safety and equality for women. 4. Extension of the Women on Temporary Visas Experiencing Violence Pilot and ongoing funding for migration law assistance for women on temporary visas experiencing violence. 5. Additional pilot sites to provide trauma-informed legal services to victim-survivors of sexual assault, including assistance navigating the criminal justice system. 6. A pilot to establish a trauma-informed and specialist Hague Convention Legal Service to assist women and children fleeing overseas to escape violence.
