I believe the 'door is always open' is one of the worst lines an Exec can say. If you are preparing a board report or quarterly business review, the door needs to be shut so you can focus without interuption or disruption. I was really clear with my teams when my door was open and when/why it was shut. They were also super clear on when they could/should knock down a closed door! I have Mozart time daily (time for myself, by myself and with myself - no technology) so I can be still and think. Greatness requires stillness in my view. Be a ruthless prioritiser, shorten every meeting (do you need it at all?) have clarity on what matters most & utilise the GiFT631 4M morning routine, linked to a high performance diary and timeblocking. 🦅

Great response. We are actually talking about 2 things. 1) Overwhelm 2) Delegation. Shatanese nails it for me with regard to overwhelm and how to respond. Great leaders delegate to build experience, decision making, accountability, empowerment and capability not just to escape overwhelm!

As a senior executive turned coach here is how I handled performance that didn't meet my own or the company's expectations. Firstly, it should not be a surprise given the quality of financial/business reporting.......unless it is a very marginal call and then there is no need to get overly disappointed. Secondly, there is a shared accountability and responsibility with other Execs and your direct team. Ensure you have the right debrief processes in place to understand the gap to plan and how to ensure you then create a fast start to the next reporting period. What are your new/revised initiatives? In terms of a coach, be there to help facilitate these processes and stimulate the energy to ensure they take place. You are working with execs!

When I was made redundant and then Covid took away 90% of my business what did I do? I doubled my movement/exercise, meditation, journalling, self-development, thinking/Mozart time along with leaning into and extending my network/relationships - use the power of a winning/inner circle to be the wind beneath your wings when needed. I also took the opportunity to do more of the things I love to do in between short, sharp, focused bursts of activity! Finally work out who can help you (and in what way) and then go and ask for the help!
