What are the key benefits of coaching leadership for long-term success?
The most important reason for a leader to use the coaching style (rather than a directive / telling style) is to cultivate psychological safety. Leaders who coach with authenticity and vulnerability at the right time create an environment of learning. This leader stretches their team into the zone of proximal development (Vygotsky) but also allows their team members to make mistakes. The mistakes are celebrated (and not disciplined) and used as opportunties to grow and learn. Leaders who coach also share their own mistakes, they lead by example demonstrating that all of us have weaknesses, gaps in our knowledge, and with all the good intention still make mistakes. People working for leaders who coach will thrive.

What do you do if you're not sure what your strengths and weaknesses are?
The quickest way to understand your strengths and weaknesses is to stretch yourself. Challenge yourself with a situation, conversation or activity that results in you feeling a little anxious and out of your comfort zone. Vygotsky describes this as our zone of proximal development. In this zone we gain absolute clarity on our strengths and weaknesses, but also grow and develop in significant ways.

What are the most effective ways to prevent conflicts in a team?
The key to establishing a high performance culture is not to prevent conflict but instead embrace conflict. If we have a mindset of preventing conflict we actually reduce the psychological safety within the team i.e afraid to say something that might conflict with the majority view. Better decisions, improvements and change all come from a minority view. It requires courage to speak up. What teams need is challenge and debate Psychological Safety that supports successful resolution of disagreement, debate and conflict.
