Equal parts researcher / designer / educator — I have decades of experience integrating the disposition and literacies of these three practices. I am passionate about designing transformative encounters that shift how we show up and act in the world.
My love of learning was evident even back when I got expelled from kindergarten for leading my peers in a vocal protest to go to 'big school'. Years later after a string of excellent setbacks I was rejected from teacher’s college, failed first year law and stumbled into studying design. From day one I knew I had found my way home. The designer’s speculative yet reflective mode of inquiry perfectly suits my interest in exploring how we can continuously deepen our capacity to attune to the invisible forces and essential relationships alive in any given context.
A compulsive, curious learner I went on to do a silly amount of formal education. Yet the holistic Indigenous lessons my Māori kaumatua (elders) taught me as a young Ngāti Kahungunu woman most directly inform my values and beliefs about transformative, embodied knowing, doing and being.
My decade as the dean of academic initiatives and core faculty in the Transdisciplinary Design program at Parsons School of Design, New York is where I got to explore the role of design in addressing complex social challenges. Curious about what design contributes to the call for continuous learning, unlearning and reskilling I have brought bring my design practice expertise and Indigenous knowing to research collaborations with educational and social psychologists, learning scientists, organizational change and queer methodologists.
With my collaborators at WonderLab I am invested in designing playful, relational and reciprocal co-creative encounters that help us do the challenging shiftwork of unsettling out-of-date mental models, transforming mindsets and envisaging more just and equitable futures.
