With virtual driving technology, vision-impaired drivers can gain confidence and experience without the risk of accidents or damage to vehicles. Moreover, myDRIVESCHOOL® has helped reduce the cost of specialized traditional driving training programs. By using simulators, drivers can reduce the number of hours they need to spend on the road with an instructor or in a car, which can be costly in terms of both time and money. Overall, myDRIVESCHOOL® technology is a valuable tool for our current research and provides effective driver training with an instant bio-feedback loop. It offers a safe, cost-effective, and efficient way to learn and practice driving skills, and can ultimately lead to safer roads for all. I grew up in and around motorsport - and despite leaving Australia in 1996 to escape the industry, I accidentally ended up working for one of the largest motorsport companies in the world in the UK. I use the 20+ years experience in the industry (both here and abroad), knowledge and networks to do something that, to me, matters more than going around and around in circles fast (no offence intended).
Motorsport is about entertainment, but also has a reputation of designing and developing products and services, for eventual mainstream use. I've used my experience to design and develop myDRIVESCHOOL® - a simulation game to teach people how to drive online. The objective is to reduce road trauma - the biggest killer of youths worldwide. It's using the same tools that professional race drivers use, to improve cognitive skills, competency levels and train for situations otherwise too dangerous to do safely IRL.
myDRIVESCHOOL® is safe, fun, scalable & it works - our students rated 48% more competent and 17% less anxious.
myDRIVESCHOOL@ was originally designed for Learner Drivers. but has since been repurposed for SO many other markets as a diverse and inclusive road safety training resource. For example, NDIS participants, disability, rehabilitation, indigenous, corrections, CaLD, immigration/refugees, elderly, etc. ALL these groups need safe/specialised practical driver training. Learning to drive should be open to all, fun for all and safe for all.
The program has been described as "potentially the best road safety initiative since the 3 point safety belt" by Paul Gover - motoring journalist/author. myDRIVESCHOOL® won the 2019 Australasian Serious Games Congress with the highest score in the history of the event.
In 2023 myDRIVESCHOOL® won the People's Choice Award at the Remarkable Showcase (Disability Tech), was shortlisted for an Australian Road Safety Foundation Award and won the "I wish I'd done that" Pause Award in 2022.
"In 2019 when we first launched myDRIVESCHOOL® I thought we'd developed a pretty cool game to teach people how to drive, 4 years later I realise we've created SO much more. Having a drivers licence is more than an ID card - it's independence, social inclusion, employability and freedom".
