Co-founded Goldfields Auto Spares Pty Ltd (automotive, industrial and mining supplies) and as MD, grew it to be the largest privately owned auto parts superstore in WA enjoying a multiple million dollar turnover.

Entered Parliament at age 31 in 2001 by becoming the first Liberal in history to win the state seat of Kalgoorlie and at age 35 became Opposition Leader in WA. Also held the roles of Shadow State Treasurer for WA, Shadow Minister for Commerce & International Trade, Shadow Minister for Police and Deputy Chairman of the Corruption and Crime Commission (JSC).

2009 retired from Parliament and took up positions as Chairman of a number of public companies. Took on responsibility for or had oversight of numerous capital raises totalling in the tens of millions of dollars.

Founded Vendwest, a private businesses that runs under management and is the largest coffee vending machine operator in WA selling nearly 2m cups of coffee per annum through its onsite coffee machines at worksites and public places.

Appointed General Manager of Covs Parts (Formally Coventrys) . Covs are a leading supplier of automotive, industrial and mining supplies based in Perth and were purchased by the AHG Group in 2011.

Responsible for over 450 employees across 27 locations.

2013 Commenced Government, Investor & Public Relations firm "Birney Corporate Pty Ltd".

Founded Bulls N Bears in 2015 in joint venture with The West Australian Newspaper and The Business News Newspaper. Bulls n Bears writes insightful, intelligent news articles about small to mid cap ASX listed companies - all of which are published across all online and digital channels belonging to The West Australian and Business News newspapers.
