38 years experience as coal mining engineer, geotechnical engineer / rock mechanics engineer, primarily in South Africa, Australia and UK but also USA, Indonesia, Sardinia and Poland with a strong record of high value optimisation, innovation and problem solving. Has been involved with the design, planning and operation of all major coal mining methods, longwall, pillar extraction, bord and pillar, auger and partial pillar extraction.

Specialties: Optimising pillar, mine layout and ground support design for underground coal mining operations. Developing safety/operating procedures and training packages. Optimising reserve recovery and production efficiency. Feasibility studies. Rock testing, analysis and classification (CMRR, RMR and Q). Strata monitoring. Risk assessments. Principal Hazard Management Plans. Geotechnical investigations, classifications and support design for shafts and cross-measures drifts.
Provides expert quality proof reading and peer review of engineering documentation.

What do you do if you've made common mistakes as a mining engineer and need to bounce back?
As engineers, most of what we know is based on our experience and the knowledge we have gained from other professionals. With mining in particular, due to the uncertainty and variability of the materials we work with, situations sometimes arise for which no precedent exists. In these circumstances, decisions made in good faith on the available information turn out to be wrong because the full range of potential outcomes was not appreciated. It is imperative to fully investigate and understand this new behaviour and to incorporate it, where relevant, into future designs. It is equally important, from a duty of care perspective, to communicate your experience to the wider mining community. This is how our knowledge and understanding advances.
