“When I first met Paul I was extremely impressed with his strategic thinking and his ability to bring people on the journey with him. Paul is a great thinker and has the academic and practical experience in the 'CEO seat' to back it up. His vision and leadership style have enabled him to accomplish some extraordinary achievements - both in the business world and his personal life. As Paul and I have developed our business relationship, I have come to appreciate his different way of thinking and the guidance, counsel and mentorship he provides. Paul spoke at a recent event of ours about 'Thinking like a CEO'. We learnt about cherished theories vs data driven truths, the risk to business owners of cognitive overload, and about constantly learning and educating yourself. The feedback from our entire business community was unbelievably positive and many people learnt lessons that will have an enduring impact. Paul is a purpose driven human. He takes the time to think about what impact he is having on the business world but also his own personal journey and his impact on society. Paul's special gifts are humility and curiosity and he genuinely enjoys helping people.”

What do you do if your team is facing conflicts and needs to foster collaboration?
I have often seen teams become “politely dysfunctional” as they confuse the presence of tension as evidence of conflict, and conflict as a negative that must be quelled. Instead, it is vital to foster respectful conflict and the embrace of tension as evidence of intelligent people making change happen. “Polite Dysfunction” leads to indecision - and more harm is done with indecision than wrong decision. Wrong decision creates learning and an opportunity for new decisions and understanding. Indecision causes stasis and robs teams of the opportunity to innovative or learn as they simply and politely doze through inertia.

What are the best practices for setting deadlines in a Social Impact project?
“What gets measured gets manipulated” Deadlines and timelines are a certain recipe for creating distraction, confusion and complexity in social impact projects. Funders want to ringfence project scopes so they fit neatly into a box - which leads to manipulation of the project timeline to match - which leads to manipulating the measures used - which leads to compromise in service delivery. Using an impact framework and back solving the connections among activities, outputs and outcomes should affect the Funders treatment of input rather than the Funders input affecting the project. This negotiation is vital among stakeholders. Is the vision genuinely going to be achieved or is an earnestly worthy but feckless activity going to happen?
