About

I am an Associate Professor in Nursing working with the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedicine at the Australian Catholic University. After studying theology and church history early in my career, I entered nursing and spent two decades working in hospital-based and community mental healthcare. In 2005, I founded Australia’s first nurse practitioner-led mental health charity, ROAM Communities (ROAM was an acronym for Recovery through Ownership Action and Management), which I led from 2005-2015. During that time, as I assisted people who were experiencing mental illness to overcome homelessness and other forms of social disadvantage, I became interested in influencing mental healthcare through education and research.
I have provided training and consultancy to organisations such as Housing NSW, Juvenile Justice NSW, Sydney City Council, Ted Noffs Foundation, and the Salvation Army, and my work in mental healthcare has led to several awards. In 2009 I was privileged to receive a Churchill Fellowship from the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, which enabled me to research Nurse Practitioner led homelessness services in North America. Continued work among vulnerable populations led to a Mental Health Nurse Achievement Award from the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses in 2014, followed by a Community Partnership Award from the University of Western Sydney, and in 2016 I was inducted as a Fellow of the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses.
I have a growing body of publications, including over sixty peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters related to mental healthcare, homelessness, and history. In 2023 I was proud to release my first book titled, 'The Remarkable Mr and Mrs Johnson, Founders of Modern Australia's First Church, Schools and Charity, and Friends of Aboriginal People, 1788 -1800.' I am particularly enthusiastic about the potential history has to increase our appreciation of the nuance, complexity and moral ambiguity that contribute to the webs of knowledge we each develop and rely on as we navigate our world. Understanding history can improve our ability to cope with the present and may also be used to develop vision and a sense of purpose that enables us to make our world a better place.
