We were pleased to host the regional launch of Queensland Road Safety Week today, with our partners from Department of Transport and Main Roads the Queensland Police Service, Sunshine Coast Council and Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC). Through work with our Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC)/UniSC Road Safety Research Collaboration, we are passionate about undertaking applied research that positively impacts the lives and safety of Queenslanders. As part of the Queensland Road Safety Week launch, we held a packed Seniors Road Safety Forum, where attendees heard from police and experts about staying safe on our roads. Sincerely, thank you to everyone who made the launch event such a success and helped drive home the message about undertaking safe behaviours in and around our roads. As ever, a timely reminder that we're on one team – let's drive like it.

Congratulations to Trinh Huynh – the recipient of Timber Queensland's Kennedy’s Timber Award! Trinh, who is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at our Forest Research Institute, will use the $10,000 award to explore opportunities to enhance silvopasture in Queensland, drawing on practices from the South East Climate Hub in the United States. “Silvopastoral systems integrate trees, pasture and livestock, providing environmental and economic benefits,” Trinh told Timber Queensland. “By comparing the US government's support for graziers in drought-prone areas with Queensland’s policies, I hope to understand which government initiatives are most effective in supporting silvopasture adoption and resilience," she said. A massive congratulations to the recipients of this year's scholarships and bursaries from our friends at Queensland Hydro. Two of the Queensland Hydro scholarships, worth $10,000 each, are awarded to second-year engineering students annually. Now in its second year, Blake Thomasson and Logan Arnold were this year's recipients of the scholarships. Along with that, Queensland Hydro offer four equity-based bursaries annually of $2,500 each. These generous initiatives go a long way to helping build and secure a pipeline of local engineering talent to help on projects such as the proposed Borumba Pumped Hydro Project. Congratulations, Dr Sophie Andrews! Sophie is one of our fantastic researchers based out of the UniSC Thompson Institute who’s investigating ways to reduce the risk of developing dementia - a hugely important area of research. This Tall Poppy award is well-deserved recognition for another one of our dedicated scientists - congratulations!
Congratulations to Dr Sophie Andrews who was last night named a Queensland Tall Poppy! Sophie leads our Healthy Brain Ageing research program, investigating how lifestyle can improve brain health and reduce risk of dementia, and how to support people to make these positive lifestyle changes long-term. In addition to this important research, Sophie is active in educating the wider community on the role of lifestyle in dementia risk reduction, and promotes science careers to young Australians as a Superstar of STEM. The annual Young Tall Poppy Science Awards, created by the Australian Institute of Policy and Science, honour up-and-coming scientists who combine world-class research with an enthusiastic commitment to communicating science.
