RESEARCH - Women in sport Can period-related symptoms predict menstrual manipulation among Australian female cyclists? Serene Lee, Jeremiah PEIFFER, Eric Haakonssen, Fleur van Rens Journal of Sport Sciences (April 2024) Research from Murdoch University has found female cyclists overwhelmingly report that menstrual symptoms affect their training and competitive performance, but that they are hesitant to talk to their coaches. This study explored the extent of menstrual manipulation and its associated impact on period-related symptoms and training disruptions in Australian Female Cyclists. 205 female cyclists, from recreational to elite level, participated in an online “Female Cyclist Questionnaire (FCQ)”. More than 80% of the cyclists reported that their period-related symptoms impacted upon training and 41% made training adjustments based on these symptoms. ◾ Media release (1 July 2024) - https://lnkd.in/gSvE6Zru ◾ Research (open access) - https://lnkd.in/gJkB_Jaz If you've conducted, planned, or are currently engaged in sport research in Australia, consider adding it to the Clearinghouse for Sport, Register of Sport Research - https://lnkd.in/gjjZRCp5 #evidencebase #AusNSRA #clearinghouseforsport #winwell #playwell

RESEARCH - Administration, strategy and governance Balancing the Board: Benefits of having gender balance on state sport and active recreation boards Deakin University, Victorian Government, #ChangeOurGame (June 2024) Since July 2019, the Victorian Government’s Balance the Board policy has required all recognised sport and active recreation organisations to have a minimum of 40% women directors on their board to be eligible for Sport and Recreation Victoria community sport funding. The number of Victorian sport sector organisations with a gender balanced board has doubled over six years, from 45% in 2017 to 94% in 2023. The research also found that: - board processes became more professionalised in response to steps taken to attract and retain women on boards, - a critical mass of women on boards improved the experiences of women directors, and - women directors brought key skills to boards which enhanced board dynamics and decision making. ◾ Media release - https://lnkd.in/giaTH7um ◾ Ministerial release - https://lnkd.in/gvQYkm7a ◾ Summary report - https://lnkd.in/gmpSCs4Y If you've conducted, planned, or are currently engaged in sport research in Australia, consider adding it to the Clearinghouse for Sport, Register of Sport Research - https://lnkd.in/gjjZRCp5 #evidencebase #AusNSRA #clearinghouseforsport, #winwell #playwell

RESEARCH - Coaching and leadership The effectiveness of a short course to improve coaches’ knowledge on considerations for female athletes Anthea Clarke, Alana Leabeater, Haresh Suppiah, Alex Roberts Journal of Sports Sciences (June 2024) A study from researchers at LaTrobe University aimed to assess the effectiveness of an online short course in improving the knowledge and confidence of coaching and support staff when working with female athletes. A mixed-methods survey design was used, where participants completed surveys pre-, post-, and 6 months following an 8-week online course. Of the 92 participants who completed both pre- and post-course surveys, 72% (n = 66) were female and 67% (n = 62) were from team sports. Perceived knowledge and confidence improved following the course (p < 0.001) and were above pre-course values 6-months post (p < 0.001). Participants indicated that they enjoyed learning from a variety of content experts as well as other participants in an online format. Future courses aimed at coaching/support staff should design and deliver accessible programs aligned with the learning preferences of these individuals. ◾ Report (open access) - https://lnkd.in/gSFbUeic If you've conducted, planned, or are currently engaged in sport research in Australia, consider adding it to the Clearinghouse for Sport, Register of Sport Research - https://lnkd.in/gjjZRCp5 #evidencebase #AusNSRA #clearinghouseforsport, #winwell #playwell
