RELIABILITY OF ISOMETRIC KNEE EXTENSION AT DIFFERENT KNEE ANGLES – TESTED IN OPENED AND CLOSED KINETIC CHAIN CONDITIONS
University of Belgrade, Faculty of Sport and Physical Education, Serbia
Isometric muscle force (F) and RFD are important muscle neuromechanical components. As these variables are influenced by the muscle length, it is important to test their reliability at different knee angles. The study goal was to investigate the effects of different knee angles on reliability of FMAX and RFDMAX in opened kinetic (OKC) and closed kinetic chain (CKC) during isometric knee extensor contraction.

Nine physically active men were tested (average age 21±1.38, BW 80.75 kg ±7.80, BH 181.58cm ±7.30). After the familiarization, FMAX and RFDMAX were recorded in OKC and CKC, at 6 knee angles in a range of 80-130 in a randomized order, with a distance of 10 between each angle (hip and ankle angles were constant at 90 degrees). Isometric contraction of knee extensor muscles were performed on isokinetic dynamometer (Kin-Com, Chattanooga, TN) for the OKC test (leg extension position), and on isometric dynamometer (Serbian Institute for Sports and Medicine, Belgrade) for the CKC test (leg press position). Both tests were done twice, with 72 hours break. Reliability was evaluated by ICC.
In the OKC, for FMAX, ICC values were in a range of .656-.952 (ICC80=.952, ICC90=.882, ICC100=.951, ICC110=.889, ICC120=.759, ICC130=.656). The lowest ICC value for RFDMAX was at 130 , but the highest was at 110 (ICC80=.635, ICC90=.618, ICC100=.882, ICC110=.888, ICC120=.838, ICC130=.419). In the CKC, reliability was high to very high for FMAX through the whole range of motion (ICC=.855-.945). For RFDMAX results were significant at 80 (ICC=.819) and 90 (ICC=.825).
Results suggest that muscle length is one of the factors, that can have an influence on reliability of force variables during isometric contraction of knee extensor muscles. For OKC, smaller and middle knee angles are reliable, but greater knee angles are not reliable for FMAX and RFDMAX. For CKC, smaller knee angles are reliable for RFDMAX evaluation, while production of FMAX is reliable at all knee angles.
